to close the loop, even though mine was still weeping from all 3 places, that were replaced 3 years ago with oem parts, the fluid level was actually not very low. I believe the car ended up needing less than half qt of fluid. I now suspect the transmission error codes were caused by starvation during high-g shifting rather than low fluid level.

If it is not leaking, how did it end up needing 1/2 quart?

How would you get starvation if the fluid isn't low? When the fluid is low and you turn or stop hard you get starvation.

You could also just break the pick up tube. I avoided a pot hole but managed to drive right over its contents up the road. The concrete debris bounced off my cars underside a few times as I passed over. One of these impacts hit the trans pan which is plastic. Crack in the pan and a broken fluid pickup. The pickup is the only white plastic piece in the dirty picture. It has been removed in the clean picture. It's a $40 part if I recall. It caused weird shifting almost immediately after the impacts stoped. New pickup, new pan, pentosin unicorn fluid and a few hours......all better!
