Any Pilots here

My wife surprised me with a gift certificate for a flying lesson back in February. I finally went yesterday. Had stick time of an hour over Southern LI, Jones Beach and Atlantic Ocean. I tell you, it was alot more fun than I thought it would be. It was a rush. Felt like driving a sports car with the ability to go up and down as well as left and right. I think Im addicted already to this form of drug. Thinking about taking this further. Are there any pilots here, advice would be appreciated.

pilot here. take it further. it's rewarding. but i will say, once you're licensed and it becomes easy like driving, you'll still have fun, but it gets boring on long point-to-point routes. but the natural advantage is freedom to travel anywhere you want whenever you want.

About how much, from first lesson to license. I've heard varying #'s. trying to get a concensus.

It means 12 hours between drinking and flying...

One of my good friends is a private flight instructor and we fly very often. This weekend I went to the beach on Marthas Vineyard for 5 hours on Sat then to Calverton and Moriches to go skydiving on Sunday. Two weeks earlier we went to Block Island for dinner. He makes me fly whenever we go somewhere which is pretty cool. According to him, it would cost about $15,000 from soup to nuts and I could finish in about 6 months.

I will also say that the rush you feel was the same thing you felt when you first started driving a car... it just becomes routine.

I'm thinking about going for helicopter, seems like more fun and you can land in many more places.

The thought of flying around in a old 172 does not do much for me.

Helicopter license will cost upward of $50k. They scare the shit out of me because when a plane loses power it becomes a glider, when a helicopter loses power it becomes a rock.

It's more like $15K and in a helicopter you have autorotation in case of engine failure.

I imagine this would vary by location but I was always under the impression that it was roughly double the cost of a plane pilots license. Fuel on the runway is $6+ a gallon and time on a heli is much more expensive due to the massive amount of required maintenance. Combine that with the cost of the instructor and it adds up quickly.

i would recommend anyone looking to fly to check out ATP flight school. they have lots of different schools around the country and i found them to have excellent training. i got a couple ratings from them myself. http://www.atpflightschool.com/downl...gram_Index.pdf it's good because everything is billed on a flat rate.

$15k at the minimum if you're a 0-hour private. i would say a more realistic figure is at least $20k from scratch. no one get's it perfect in the minimum hours unless you grew up flying daddy's jetranger. i've been thinking about going for my rotorcraft add-on and my best recommendation is to get your private pilot's license first, then look to do a rotorcraft add-on. you'll probably break even at $20k for both of them and you'll have a VFR plane license, too.

that being said, helicopters are tons more complex than planes, and they're tons more an hour to operate. but overall, flying these days isn't something that can be had cheaply. it's an expensive hobby that you either must have the money to do or go at it for a career. otherwise, you'll probably wind up getting your license and never use it like many people.

Still not close to $50k.

Great idea I was wondering if that was way to do it, thanks.
Have been you been in a L39 yet?

most places won't let you land just because you can land there..

choppers are extremely loud, and you will most likely have to land in an airport or heliport.
also, by getting your PPL, you do get creditted hours of ground and air for your heli license
