I LOVE the resonance @ 2k RPM.

Who would buy an ///M and complain about such a thing?

Interesting about the engine knock. A lot of M3 owners have made reference to it thinking they have a engine problem?

I was told years ago by an aircraft engineer that "lagging" an engine is the worst thing you can do to it... much better to purr along at 3K in third around town.

At the time, he was driving a brand new '85 RX7 (awesome car) and I had an '86 Porsche 944 (another awesome car).

I remember him telling me over and over "keep the revs up!"

Euro - curious can you elaborate on what this noise is? I've heard transmission noises and I too think they are just part of living with a performance (and heavy duty/dual plate clutch) transmission - but it would be nice to know what exactly the "roll over noise" is - so I can keep an ear out for other "non-normal" noises.

thx

Absolutely! Engines, and specifically THIS M3 V8, are meant to be revved high. Most people however fear they may be doing harm because of the excessive noise. But it's just the opposite. Isn't it shame when you stop to think about it that most cars have engines that never see past 2.5k except on rare occasions? Yet they are built to rev high. The only cost is gas. But let the engine sing!

Who drives in 5th gear at 2k RPM? I don't know that I have ever done that in the car. I love the sound at 2k in 2nd gear.

I don't think I've experienced roll over noise. I have experienced a rattle that seems to be from the flywheel when moving out of gear to neutral under mild load - like when pulling into a parking space.

I already get only 12mpg driving "conservatively." If I kept the revs up, I'd probably get closer to 5mpg!

Ya forsure,

When your car is in neutral at idle with the clutch pedal out (not dpressed) you will hear a rattling/clanking noise and as soon as you depress the clutch pedal the noise is gone. And again, once you release the pedal the noise is back.......I jsut play my own music with the clutch pedal

Hope that helps

Yes I have same noise.

If you park your car next to wall, then you will definitely hear it.

All the aftermarket twin-clutch have very similar noise, and after I read the owners manual, I found out that it is "normal"

+1,And in a moderate incline, you might get knocking type sound as well in 5th gear at 2k rpm.Sounds like "engine lugging" to me...especially in a high rev engine.

I hear that knocking too, but I felt it was normal. So I guess driving around town in 5th is worse than 3rd from an engine health standpoint?

Wrong gear for the situation IMHO - funny that BMW gets the complaint so much that they need to issue a formal statement : )
