ZHP Knob?

I am prepping a quick mod list for my E90 and one of the most demanded on the 6MT seems to be the old school ZHP knob.

I don't really care so much about the whole lighting thing, so I assume all I have to do is order the knob from tirscher? That's without a boot though is it not? Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

the knob doesnt come with a boot. You either have to cut your stock one or get an aftermarket boot. Might as well cut your stock boot cause youre never going to want to go back to the OEM shifter

It's easy enough to do I assume?

Bummer. Is the knob connected to the boot?

Its a very easy install. it took maybe a half hour but thats because i was meticulous about optimizing the amount of material i got from the stock boot. IMO, this mod paired with a clutch spring delete is exactly how this car should have felt from the factory.

Can you post a photo of the final product? I'm pretty nervous to destroy the stock boot.

here you are. I also showed a comparison between stock and ZHP as well as a view of how to secure the modified boot to the shifter with a zip tie. And sorry for the quality I just got s new phone and i wanted to test the camera

Thanks, looks like a must do! Did you get the Leatherz knob or is that just the normal one? How hard was it to cut the stock boot?

How easy is it to remove the old knob? Is it the same way as 335i? just pull it up?

All you do is disconnect the wires running to the stock lighted knob, and pull up on the knob. It takes some muscle so be careful not to whack yourself in the face when it finally comes loose.

Its my stock boot. It wasnt that hard really. Start on the back of a seam where the leather is doubled up, thats where youll have the most trouble, and everything from there is a breeze. Id recommend using a brand new xacto blade, itll make your life easier

If you don't care about it lighting up, then I recommend that you also consider the BMW Performance shift knob. I prefer it to the ZHP knob.

I would imagine that this would just get incredibly hot if your car is parked in the sun all day.

I would have to agree, plus it is quite a lot less OEM looking no?

I too had this knob on my 335i and loved it. Can you get a boot for the M3 so you don't have to cut up the stock boot/knob? I looked on Tischer's web site and all they have is a boot for E9x non-M.

I'm thinking that a non M boot for the E9x car would work... I will try and get in contact with someone at Tischer and ask.

Do the Khoalty clutch stop as well, it's worth the $15 IMHO. I've been doing little things (the clutch stop, then the new knob) and letting my girlfriend drive it, she's noticed improvement, so it's not purely psychological. You have the updated clutch spring, you might not feel it necessary to do the spring removal.

I used a rubber grommet I found at Lowes instead of a zip tie, nothing poking out. Been looking for one with the same ID, but bit smaller OD, matches pretty well with the ring. There is a whole thread on this, just ignore the "lighted" part if you don't wish to attempt it.

The ring of the ZHP knob will get hot, I wouldn't want any more metal.

Why not get just M package knob and boot with custom Novillo leather?
