2008 E90 M3 with a 6-speed here
One question: What can be done about the notchy 1st to 2nd gear shift? I bought my car about two months ago (CPO with 27,000 miles on it) and it's been getting worse the more I drive. It's due for the 30,000 mile service soon so I am going to see if the trans oil helps it. I've taken my car to the dealer once, they followed the procedure as the bulletin stated (didn't tell me what they did) and then said it was "normal." Has BMW ever bought back a car because of this? Changed the synchro? Replaced the transmission? I might be dreaming... I guess the only reason is because I can't find anything else wrong with the M3 |

Same here. Second gear is ok on the track with high revs and h/t but anoying after cold startup in the morning, low speed and low revs. But I can deal with it. The second gear needs everytime just a little bit more attention then the other ones...
Does this really help? Has anyone real experience with it? |

The stock shifter is just not made to be thrown around and abused! The new one is crisp and feels much sturdier. You can read more about it on Active's website. www.ActiveAutowerke.com |

Glad to see a SSK on the M3 helps out and feels more sturdy (exactly what I'm looking for) |

I love my UUC, but plastics and rubbers are replaced with metals, so more precision is required of the user and you might hear a metal vs. metal vibration occasionally. You can't have your cake and eat it too (gain precision without noise). Also, the install can be very tight, such that it's a tough DIY project for many. My BMW tech installed mine and complained about how tight it was to get in there and get everything set up nice. Highly recommended for those that value precision over absolute quietness. Dave

You'd probably consider me "expert" since I'm an autocross instructor and have driven competitively for decades. I usually double-clutch on the downshift and am constantly aware and trying for "perfect" shifts with no resistance from the synchros. If your car is pre-owned, then it has probably not been treated as well as mine and there's a good chance that the synchros have been abused, which the best shifter in the world cannot overcome. The noise I refer to is two-fold. First, when shifting at high rpm in the lower gears, up near the redline, there's a high speed buzz or rattle during the middle of the shift. Second, when cruising, I'll occasionally get a buzz or rattle that'll go away if I simply twist the lever. Hope that helps. Dave

I have noticed that after I take the car to redline a few times, the transmission oil seems to warm up and go into every gear easier. |
