Oil type recommendations?

Hello M Family,

New owner here to an e92 m3 curious to know what kind of oil is best for an oil change. I do not have factory warranty and the time is near for an oil change. I am keeping the car and planning to change the oil every 3k-3.5k miles. What would you guys recommend? [IMG][/IMG]

OP is from NJ with freezing temps from December or so.

Use a mix of 0w40&15w50. Switch to BMW 10w60 in the spring.

Recommend LM Ceratec additives every 3 oil changes. My cars love them.

Germany gets cold, too. I'd use the weight that the book says.

Yup, good stuff. I just changed mine and after a year and 5500 miles, it still looked great.

Book written by the same people who did not mention that rod bearings wear and cause catastrophic engine failure.

Higher grade oils are needed for higher shear resistance, not necessarily for oil flow and subsequent lubrication at moderate loads. I changed engine oils in freezing temp before and you would be surprised how much slower 10w60 moves vs. 0w40 at such temps.

I drive in as cold as-20F and can hear the difference in cranking speed when 0W40 is in the pan versus 10W60. It sure is not going through the oil filter at that temp. I don’t know how many minutes of driving it r we ours take before the oil warms enough for the bypass to open.

I started using red line 5w-50 just a little bit thinner than factory oil.

Motul, Castrol or OEM 10w60 is the way to go.

OP, it says Castrol 10W60 when you open the bonnet, nothing wrong with staying with this or Shell 10W60 which BMW have cut in lately.
