Water pump and thermostat preventive maintenance?

Hey guys, I'm at about 110,000 mi now and was wondering if I should change the water pump and thermostat as preventive maintenance.

What are some ill effects that could result in not replacing them? What happens when they die?

Thermostat can be changed relatively easily, so replacing as preventative maintenance makes sense. I had mine replaced when I had belts & tensioner replaced. This was two years ago at about 110 k miles.

Early this year got a low coolant level warning and checked around various areas and noted small puddle of coolant under the water pump. Replaced the pump at that time about 145 k miles.
