got rained on with top down. electrical systems malfunction
Last night I accidentally left the to down on my e93 and it got rained on.
I let it dry out then started the car and everything worked except the radio. I could not select am/fm/sat. the i drive would move over to them, but would not select. I let it sit for another 6 hours and turned it on again and it freaked the hell out. Dash lit up like a Christmas tree, SES came on saying electrical systems malfunction. I'm not even sure where to start here as far as diagnosing the real problem. attached is my Carly diagnosis. Btw, I did have a tpm malfunction error start about a week ago after hitting a pothole. Not sure if related. reading about similar problems due to RDC but the timing of the rain incident makes me think it might not be that. I have a kDcan cable but I don't have ista/p so if someone could provide that maybe I can do some better diag? any help would be appreciated. This is my DD but I'm not really wanting to drive it in its current condition not knowing the root cause.. Last edited by Djetaine; 08-03-2019 at 09:38 PM.. |

You have a major BUS fault on that car, you need to get it diagnosed by a professional, get ready to spend some money.

Put the car in a giant bag of rice.
Kidding aside, the worst thing you could do in energize electronics when they're wet. Water itself does no damage however, it creates little shorts and routes power to places and directions where it shouldn't go. Point is, unless its an emergency you should not power on. You could get lucky and it will work fine once it completely dries out. Depending on the weather, could be days.

It dried out after a good while and everything is fine for the most part. There is a problem with the MOST loop though and I'm having trouble finding out exactly where it is. TBH though, I was having problems with this loop before the incident due to the well known water leakage issue on these cars.
The SAT tuner was under water and completely destroyed. I bypassed it with a fiber loop and everything was fine for a bit but then my MOST went out again. I'm seeing good light on every component I can get to in the trunk but nothing once it gets up to the MOST diag port in the front so theres a break somewhere. The last point I know of in the loop before it heads to the loop bundle in the door is the HD Tuner and bypassing that doesn't help. My thoughts are it's in the loop bundle or there's a MOST component I don't know about. All the electrical errors are gone though so that's a plus. Last edited by Djetaine; 08-26-2019 at 11:27 PM.. |
