How do you update the firmware?? According to BMW's website, I put my VIN in and it says it's up to date. Software and Firmware is the same correct?
My production date is 09/08 Last edited by Teerump; 06-17-2019 at 12:31 PM.. |

SUCCESS!
After many trial & errors and with the assistance of Gary and Jagaer I was able to update my vehicles navigation maps to North America 2019 via USB. I have a 2009 BMW (E90) M3 with production date 09/2008 CIC. Originally I thought my cars software needed to be updated first, but in the end that was not the case. At first I had some issues with just generating the 1b.hex file. Once I had the 1b.hex file - I would receive errors from the CIC generator to pull the FSC code. Jagaer was able to assistance with fixing my 1b.hex file (Thanks again!). Used the newly formated 1b.hex file, I was able to generate my FSC code. Downloaded the maps via the zip file on the first page (that took 7 hrs), only for them not to prompt the update in the vehicle (could be corrupt files). I tried numerous times to get the vehicle to recognize the maps (split screen/non-split screen, etc). I tried 3 different USBs all formated to FAT32. Nothing was working - I was about to just forget updating the navigation. Gary supplied the 2019 map file that he used - that took another 7 hrs to download. I moved the files to my USB this morning. Final attempt: - Start vehicle, let navigation start up - Insert USB into glovebox port - Scrolled all the way over to the right (made sure it was on non-split screen view) - Scrolled to the bottom where it says 'Navigation Version' (did NOT click into it). - Scrolled back to the main map screen - Pushed down on the CIC knob (this unchecked the 'i' that shows the time in top right corner in grey box) - Two seconds later I was prompted to update the navigation - Entered FSC Code - Took 57 minutes to download the entire map update - Upon completion, navigation prompts to restart the system *One last note* I was able to use a 128GB USB that actually had files on it including the 2019 maps and it still worked.

Congrats on getting yours to work. I still can't. I too have the same file from Gary, have tried multiple flash drives formatted to FAT32 and I still get nothing. I called Bimmertech and they ran my last 7 of my VIN and said I'm still on the original software that the car came with. Said it needs updated to accept USB updates. So, called the dealership, he wasn't really sure what I was talking about, but after some explaining he thought that was the issue as well. So I ask how much... he tells me $150-$300. I was like hell no, that's ridiculous.
So I guess I live with it the way it is or fork out the money at some point. Here's a pic of my Nav screen. I don't have an "i" in the top right corner. I followed your instructions and nothing happens. If you've got any ideas let me know. Thanks! |

Nope. You would need an iStep Update sadly.

You could call indy shops around you and ask if they can do it but yah dealer is one option. You need to get the correct cables to do it yourself

Updating the CIC requires an ICOM adapter to update properly because it is on the MOST system. You won't be able to update this properly with an K+DCAN OBD Cable. It also will take hours. You can most likely take out your navigation unit and get it updated to the latest from someone who can bench update. Nick might be able to help you. https://www.e90post.com/forums/member.php?u=378702

Teerump Hey man, just following up since I checked my service history log. I know we have the same production date (Sept '08 LCI), but when I checked my service records the entire CIC system for me was replaced Feb'19. So, maybe the iStep was updated at that point - hence why the usb update worked for me.
