I think you're headed the right direction with the stethoscope. Some tips for using it: The experience of listening to sound through the mechanics stethoscope is a unique experience. Be prepared to hear things you've never heard before. Sound travels better through more dense material, so if you press the stethoscope against a part of your car/engine, and the noise seems really loud, keep probing to see if it gets louder or softer. When trying to isolate the sound, look for sound barriers and test on both sides. For example, a bushing will dampen the sound significantly. As will a flex joint, gasket, or any other object that can move/flex. Solid blocks of metal transmit most efficiently, so place the stethoscope on either side of a sound barrier to see which side has the stronger sound level. The more flexible the object, the greater the barrier. A bushing will isolate sound a lot more than a gasket.

Some guy crossing the street actually made a comment about my ticking during a stop light. He said it doesn't sound right and that I should go get it checked.

i have the same intermittent ticking on mine.started straight after an oil change, which seems to be mentioned a lot on other threads. for some the noise has decreased or gone with mileage b ut someone had this for 20k with no other issues.
mines only when hot-silent when cold and im on 14k miles. i certainly dont suspect theres a link to bearings ,but it would be nice to find a solution. |

its bizarre how a lot of cases are starting after an oil change.one chap has tried different brands of oil ,but no difference.the heat shields are quite flimsy around the manifolds but its strange that each case is in the same area of the car.
mine only started about a month ago when oil changed, never heard anything before that and its most prominent under passenger side wheel. (uk rhd car). |

Bring it to RRT in Sterling for another opinion if it still drives you crazy. Probably heat shield related though.

ITS NOT HEATSHIELDS!!!! I've had this noise since 23,000 miles, still after 2 rod bearing changes and I'm now at 162,000. It is more prevalent with new oil and let's up after the oil gets about 1,500 on it. I would love for someone to figure this out because this fucking noise is my ONLY gripe about this car and as you can read aggravates me!!!!!
