Head Studs

Any cons of running head studs on the S65 engine? Is it an overkill?

The factory stuff is proven and is 100% reliable. There is a guy on the east coast that runs a race car rental business and his E92 M3 had over 70k track miles until the head gasket let go ONLY because his original water pump had broken and didn't flow coolant. Unless you're going with an insane amount of boost, you will be fine. Even the supercharged cars run factory bolts/head gaskets.

You could ask Gintani what they did for their twin turbo builds.

Would it be easier on the block threads, using the studs instead of bolts?

Unless you plan on removing the heads multiple times, it doesn't matter. Use new bolts and you'll be ok. I have used the same S52 block with 6 different head combos, all with new head bolts. No issues.

I feel like so few of us have pulled heads off these cars that you may have to ask deansbimmer or maybe amrazm about something this specific. Wish I had a solid answer for you.

This discussion reminds me of this video. I suspect the same principle applies to the S65:

He’s one of the main reasons why I am hesitant on running studs. He knows what he’s talking about

s52s pull out the studs out of the block when you turn things up.. anyways, I am running more than 7lbs of boost on stock head bolts and never pushed coolant.
