Question Sticky Steering Wheel

Hi all,

Is there any good solution for eliminating the stickyness factor of the standard E90 BMW M black steering wheel? I believe is leather based.

It's not a 'sticky patch' problem. It's a 'touch a leather couch on a warm day, peel yourself off' type of sticky.

I test drove several M3's before purchasing mine, it was generally common issue among them.

The steering wheel I feel is clean and in good condition (but 11 years old on a 2009 M3).

Am considering getting a replacement alcantara wrapped wheel to resolve this issue (I live in humid part of town, if it's tad sticky now I imagine will only get worse as Summer approaches). Hoping I won't have to.

Thanks in advance for all thoughts and feedback!

Leatherique.
I just used it on my seats and steering wheel. Brilliant results. Lovely matt soft finish.
Just use the rejuvenation oil and wash off with warm water. Don't bother with the pristine clean.

I know this may sound weird but...

Use a fine grit sand paper, wipe clean, then a magic eraser.

Curious. Talk me through your theory.

It returns a light texture to the leather. After time, it gets "polished" from handling and loses that satin finish. Sanding it also gets any high spots that have built up. The magic eraser just helps even out the look and gets any residual bits off.

No sand paper on leather!!

Colourlock (UK) makes a leather sanding pad, but that is for a repair of damaged leather to smooth the surface prior to applying a leather dye or adding a filler.

Any good automotive leather cleaner will remove the stickiness and shine. Then apply a conditioner and serum if they make it. Shiny leather is caused by oil from the skin on the leather, plus french fries!! Try Colourlock (UK) mild/strong leather cleaner.

In general, older BMWs had shiny leather on their steering wheels from the factory. The rest of the interior had beautiful matte leather on ///M cars. Regular BMW 3-series cars have hideous pebbled leather.

I don't think you will be happy until you get a new rewrapped custom steering wheel.
Try royalsteeringwheels.com (UK) or Mashimarho (US/Seattle).

https://mashimarho.com/products/e9x-...=6390065692699

NOTE: Jack at Royal Steering Wheels will send you the new custom steering wheel and then you can return your core later. No down time. This is the most cost-effective solution. I have 2 RSW steering wheels. Gorgeous...makes the cars.

A light touch with a magic eraser is OK, but then follow-up with leather cleaner and conditioner. Magic Eraser leaves a milky film behind.

Cheers

PS If you go the custom steering wheel route..add a new trim cover piece, colored M-button, custom shift paddles, and colored instrument cluster gauge overlays.

Royal Steering Wheels in the UK does everything by hand. They are re-wrapped BMW OEM wheels with new leather/alcantara, plus custom stitching and padding.

I think Mashimarho gets his wheels from Ukraine...since they have exotic carbon fiber and electronic options.

http://azaautowheel.com/

No they are not in Illinois...HaHa.

Most steering wheels are $300-$600 after the core return.

Different types of steering wheel materials require different cleaning methods. Here’s a quick guide on how to clean each type:

Leather steering wheels can be cleaned with a damp cloth and some mild soap. Avoid using harsh chemicals or scrubbing too hard, as this could damage the leather.
