Track Day vs. Maintenance and Warranty

I've got a two-day DE coming up in a week or so, and before I go, I need a tech inspection. If I go to the dealer for this, are they going to flag me and give my grief when it comes to warranty claims?

How about BMW's maintenance. Replacement brakes seems like the kind of thing they'd be very eager to deny.

Any input is welcome.

I'm not really sure on if the dealer would flag you down for the track day inspection or not.

I do know that that if your brake pads go out extremely fast, they probably can get a clue that you're a pretty rough driver.....And they may deny you new brake pads under the warranty.

Honestly, I would just call and ask your SA if he's very cool with you. I'm sure he won't mind you asking at least.

i wouldnt go to the dealer for a track day inspection. there are many external shops that can do it for a much cheaper price. you'll prob get rapped by the dealer.

Agreed. Given the price risk and warranty risk I just booked in with a specialty shop for next week.

What does it mean for car companies when I look at their dealerships and service bays as my enemy, not my friend?

I get my tech inspection done by the dealer and they do it free of charge because I throw my tire business their way (they still match the local tire shops' prices).

You don't say which org is running the DE, but keep in mind that many indie shops will do NASA or SCCA track inspections for free. Try asking in your regional.

Beat me to it. Whom ever you are signed up with for the DE, ask them who they recommend to do your track inspection. Most have sponsors who will gladly help you out, and more than likely, it will be free. I always tip the mech who techs my car.

I would definitely avoid the dealer for this. They'll probably charge you an insane amount for it and you my run the risk of being flagged. Find a local race shop and it shouldn't be too expensive.

I've bought a few cars from our dealer, they did it for free last time with no hassle. It really depends on your dealer.

I usually do it at the dealer for free and last time I wont after the track day for new break pads and they changed it with no hassle.

owww I just inspect the car at Autoscoop for the coming week DE event, its just closer to my place and they also do it for free.

Your car is new so tech inspection is fairly quick and any mechanic should b able to do it. U basically want to check all ur fluid caps, battery is secure, lug nuts, ball joints (which should b perfect cause ur car is new), tire thread, brakes and those are the main things.

I wouldnt take it to a dealer unless ur cool with a tech or SA, cause they might hassle u for it down the line.

Do not take your car to the dealer for a track day inspection. It will be marked and anything that they can link to the track day will not be warrantied.

When I got my first inspection at BMW of Austin on my E46 back in 2002 when I was new to this, they put a note in my file. However, I never received any grief for it, even when I went through inspection I, II, and I again under the 50K maintenance. That car was falling apart at 50K miles, and by 65K literally every major component in the drivetrain had been replaced (diff, SMG tranny, driveshaft, flywheel/clutch), and all accessories on the motor were replaced (alternator, water pump, A/C, PS pump). The motor stayed strong though, pretty amazing...

I would never do this at BMW of Austin. Kind of depends on your dealer and your relationship with them.

I personally would never go to the dealer for anything related to track preparations.
