Joekerr I thought of you this weekend. I was at the hand car wash. A sweet Israeli lady works the counter. She was on the phone with someone talking about vacuum cleaners and her 50 year old Electrolux that still works. After she hung up I commented on what great vacuums they were. She said her husband bought it for her as a birthday present years ago - she should have killed him then. You might want to re-think that dishwasher.

Your concern is touching. I honestly think I'd live though, and here's why:

Two Christmas' ago, I gave my wife a Vitamix blender as a combo birthday / Christmas present (my wife's bday less than two weeks before Christmas). Lups was convinced my nuts would wind up in it and warned me repeatedly. However, my wife loved it. Thanked me for it a number of times and has used it a fair bit.

This past year, I gave my wife car organizers that hang off the back seat that she can fill with kleenex and various things for the kids. Also loved it.

At this point, one could surmise that I'm morbidly curious to see just how far I can go. And a dishwasher would certainly be interesting.

Thing is, neither of us really needs / wants anything...the stuff we want is too expensive for a gift. In fairness to me, one of the stocking stuffer things she got me was a motion sensing light thing that fits around the toilet rim underneath the seat and lights up the toilet bowl when it senses motion and its dark.

She thought it was hilarious. Myself, not as much, I just told her that I'm not cleaning it. I have to change the colour of the light though, first time at night I took a piss and scared myself cause it was a pinkish glow that makes everything in the bowl look like blood. Thought I was dying, ran over to turn on the bathroom light to make sure.
