My reply was to people thinking an M3 is a good first car for teens since it is a safe car.

No doubt, the E92s are much more car than the E36, so it's hard to say... E92 with 415 hp vs the 240 hp in the E36 is a big difference. The most important thing IMO is to understand oversteer and how RWD can get a little nutty if you aren't careful. There are plenty of "kids" that race cars and motorcycles competitively (and are excellent at it). No reason to put a blanket "no" or "yes" across the board. Depends on the kid and their understanding of driving.

No offense to the OP but why would anyone even consider giving an
inexperienced driver a 420 hp RWD car to learn in? Some of the posts going with the 'depends on the driving experience of the kid' are just laughable - on the road with other cars, pedestrians etc etc a 15 year old has no experience, end of story. Obviously these are just my personal opinions - i would have liked an M3 at 15 though!!

fuck no. kids are stupid and do dumb shit. Hell I'm pretty lucky I'm not dead..I would get my kid an 80k SUV but definitely not a sports car with 400+ HP.

I can promise I would have been dead or lost my liscence for a longgg time if I had my hands on an m3 at age 16. Regardless of how "good" a driver you are really has no bearing on the risks. Its hard enough as an adult to not get your liscence pulled from speeding too easily. Between general lack of life experience, poor decision making, peer pressure to ("lets see what it can do") and so on would really make it a bad idea IMO. If your kid can race than take him to the track with the m3 but doesn't mean he should have it for the roads.

Alot of people, myself included, say they would get a M3 for their kids 1st car as long as they're responsible. It's hard to say what you'll do when you actual have a kid and that time comes. I talked to my parents about this thread tonight to get their opinion since they already went through it. They said they wouldn't have gotten me a M3 if they could've afforded one for my 16th birthday but they would've for a HS grad present. Like most of you, they think 414hp is way too much for a brand new driver (they think 414hp is unnecessary, period! lol). They said after some real world experience they would've had no problem tossing me the keys to a new M3 when I graduated (I was 17). It doesn't matter if you have a 150hp or 600hp car as long as you drive safely and obey the rules of the road.
I had a friend in HS who would never speed. It wouldn't matter if you gave him a 458 italia, he'd go exactly the speed limit! You can't judge one kid based on what others do! It's like stereotyping a person because of their race or religion. This topic should be handled on case by case basis. |

Would I give my kid my car?
Given what you stated, yes, with one rule........... That she attends several HPDE's and learns "how to drive" properly. I would not just hand over the keys to my kid without her knowing the limits of the car, how to properly control it, etc, etc. If she can impress me around the track, etc., then I would do it.

The op's question is a joke right?
What kind of a jerk parent would give their child an M3 because they didn't want to let it go. Only an awful, irresponsible parent would jeopardize their child's life for such selfish reasons. Unbelievable. |

Bought my first M3 at 17
Now 22 and have owned 2 E46 M3 1 E36 M3 2 E30 M3 1 E92 M3 Worked hard and paid for them all myself. All driven responsibly but would not purchase them for my kids when the time comes. People need to work to appreciate things in life.

To all of you teens out there that think you are brilliant and an exception to the rule:
If you are a boy, it is a scientific fact that right now your brain is slightly defective. The part of your brain that actually thinks ahead and considers the consequences of actions taken is not fully developed. You may think you are really responsible right now, but in 15 years you will look back and wonder how you survived being such an idiot. A teen is not capable of processing many critical decisions. In my opinion getting your teen a high horse power car is putting your child at unnecessary risk no matter how responsible you think he is. Kids are really good at fooling their parents (I did a pretty good job when I was a teen). For all of you teens out there driving an M3; let's hope you drive more responsibly than I did when I was your age and your brain doesn't develop like every other kids brain on the face of the planet. |

I've already contributed and said that I'd have killed myself in a 414hp M3 at 16, but I think very few 16 year olds (boys especially) can handle that car and not get in trouble.
An M3 is as safe or safer than a lot of cars once it at speed. It can outbrake a lot of other cars most 16 year olds may be driving, and is a safely designed car that won't be flipping over on flat ground or anything. It also has the power to avoid dangerous situations. However, we all know that a high hp rwd car is also unsafe when an invincible noob is behind the wheel, mashing the pedal into turns, through turns and out of turns. I don't think the M3 is an overly tail happy car at all, but it's not particularly safe when the driver does not know how to properly apply that power to the ground. Let's not forget just how confidence inspiring BMW's, and especially the M3 is. I'm sure everyone's M3 in here makes them feel like Seb Vettel, but we all know the car and the PSS tires are doing all the work. A cocky testosterone filled teenage boy is a high risk driver behind the wheel of one of these machines. I still wish my parents let me get the E36 M3 when I was 16. They blamed their choice not to on the fact that they'd like grandkids one day. I got an underpowered E46 325 instead and that probably saved me from multiple potential car accidents. |

Assuming that she is a good kid, I say let her have it. Statistically, girls are much less likely to behave recklessly - a teenage girl doesn't care about "showing off" the ride in the same way that a 16 year old boy does. Generally speaking, of course. I was lucky enough to receive a brand new BMW as my first car and the most "reckless" thing I did was drive around drop top with friends, blasting obnoxious pop music.

Hell no. This car scares me sometimes and I've been driving for 10+ years. On the other hand, when I'm not pushing it hard I feel much safer in it than other cars I've driven. The handling and breaking is excellent, and the extra power helps get out of dangerous situations quickly.
It's a double edged sword, and I wouldn't trust a young new driver with it. Also, they should do something to earn it. Maybe my perspective is skewed... my first car was a 10 year old Ford Taurus station wagon haha. College graduation, maybe, if they demonstrated responsible driving (no significant accidents, tickets, etc) Last edited by tlr; 10-17-2011 at 10:17 PM.. |

No, I do not believe in buying expensive things for children. They need to worry about getting an education and making some thing out of themselves. To do this they need economical transportation from point A to point B to save money to pay for college tuition instead of piling up a car note on loans.
When you get a successful career and save up enough financially then buy yourself and M3 or Ferrari and I would care less.
