The state DMV will ask you to prove you are living in state. Either with a copy of your orders taking you there or a water bill, electric bill, etc. At least this is what they did when I registered in VA.

Chances are you won't be able to get it registered in a random state that you have no connections to. You could try FL, since you have relatives there, but you might have to get one of them to register it for you in their name.

I wouldn't make your plans public though

You usually have two choices regarding where to title and license a car when you're military-state of residence or state of domicile. You just can't (legally) pick the one that gives you the best deal.

Whether or not you are a domiciliary of a state depends on a lot of factors-do you have a driver's license, do you vote there, do you own property, etc.

I bought my M3 and an older 325i through Pentagon Car Sales. The first time was a hassle with shipping, but now they do it all for you and ship it directly to a dealer of your choice who will prep it.

It's a great perk, no hassle pricing and near invoice price, since you pay MSRP on options.

You may or may not have to pay sales tax based on the state. I paid it when living in WA, but didn't pay living in HI.

Pentagon Car Sales did collect a Gas Guzzler tax to ship to the US.

OP,

I am in Afghanistan (retired USAF) and I had my 2012 E93 M3 purchased for $59k drive out (demo discount of 5k) loaded....just changed it and put in order for a 2013 vert.....DO IT...bc I could MAYBE see myself trading in my car after year 2 or 3 for the upcoming M4 vert (IF I like it) and I should come fairly close to what I am paying for my car......it will be like one hell of a lease deal. BTW I 've ordered 3 cars through PCS (09 335I vert, 2010 650I vert, and 09 X5).....DO IT!

Look into the demo deal as the miles accrued on it won't come anywhere near the 1200 mile break in (so you have to finish that up), but you get an addition refund added to your dwn pmt...

I purchased my M3 in Japan. I had a small misunderstanding on the delivery location and transfer of funds but otherwise no problems getting a delivery to CO.

I had the option to place a "pre-purchase" plan which allowed me to purchase a time later once I returned to CONUS. So....now I have sweet Jet Black M3 and the "pre-purchase" and ability to purchase another at overseas military price in the coming year! My mother wants me to pull the trigger on the 335.

As for delivery of the vehicle- find a relative in the cheapest tax state possible and arrange for the vehicle delivery there. If you give that relative complete POA then they can pick it up, register and plate it without you having to be there (if your schedule can't accomodate).

The part of ordering your M3 now for the v-8 or later is ur choice. If your having a conflict of ordering and receiving the vehicle then look into the pre-purchase plan.

Ordered at the end of my time in Afghanistan, picked it up two months after getting home. Like everyone said good discount. Only thing I can add is Performance Center Delivery is an option too. I recommend it if you can.

Most likely going to end up Paying the tax in South Carolina, don't know the cost yet but rather pay it then have some local here side swipe it n only have to pay 100 dollars.. But unfortunately I am here for two years so it's either purchase the car right around the time i will be going on leave or just wait until my tour here comes to an end, many options to think of..

I know what you mean..former Army myself, dad was a Marine. However, the difference in discount from what you can pay for the car being a "PFC" (you know what this means) is minimal for the sacrifices these guys are going through right now, hell even in peace time if you are an 0311 or 11B (what I was), it kicks your ass..

I've bought 2 through mil sales. My experience with the pickup was...you show up, they give you keys and you are on your way.

I bought my M3 through euro delivery. WELL WORTH the cost of the trip to pick it up. The experience is first class. Even if you just fly to Munich, take delivery, and fly back...its worth it.

Mil sales prices are about the same as ED invoice. The prices that Golfrrr offers through ED are about the same. If you want to go with an individual option...mil sales is a no go.

Concur. Mil Sales and Individual won't happen--yet. They are apparently trying to open that up to us, however.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but a mil sales ED would be probably the absolute lowest price available for a new BMW, no?

Mil sales is the same as ED invoice. So mil sales will be a tad cheaper. As I've said earlier, the experience of ED is so worth it. Even better if you can do PCD too.

I bought my M3 from Golfrrr (Steve Thomas BMW) who is in CA. They let me register the car in my state of residence, OR. So you should have the same flexibility with ED and mil sales as far as having some control over which state you register in (read: how much sales tax you pay). But I'd x2 check with whatever ED dealer you go with before closing the deal.

I ended up saving $11,500 (ED discount + no sales tax) minus the $4000 I spent for my european vaca and trip to Greenville, SC.

But one cannot combine military sales price AND an additional discount for ED then, right?

No. The mil sales discount is the same as the ED discount. Actually you're avoiding the same surcharge.

Be aware, it is different for every single state. Some people can avoid the sales/use tax completely when they ship the car back, but some can't. There's no specific amount of time either. Some states require you own the car for 12 months, some 6, some it doesn't matter at all. I'm 100% serious on this. Please do the research on your DMV website where ever you are planning to register the car when you get back.

So you know, I tried every avenue to avoid it. Basically I had two options, either register the car at my home of record (Phila, PA) or register it where my orders were taking me (VA). Both states had laws that said no matter how old the car was, I would pay a tax on registering it. If it was older than 6 months in VA, I'd pay the tax based on the current value. If I was older than 12 months in PA, I'd pay the tax based on the current value. If it was younger than either of those in the respective state, I'd pay the tax on what was on the Bill of Sale. My car was only 4 months old, so my decision came down to which state had the higher tax rate. PA was 8% and VA was 3%... I think I paid a little over $2k in taxes.

In some states, there's absolutely nothing you can do to avoid it. I tried JAG, I tried every legal loophole I thought I could find, but there were none. While I agree it's a load of crap, there's nothing you can do.

If you have questions on the tax process, let me know. My advice would be to do the research, figure out how much you might pay (if anything) and then save that money. I've gotten into many arguments with people on this, so once again for the illiterate IT VARIES BY STATE, YOU MAY NOT HAVE TO PAY TAXES.
TEMPLAR, that's some good gouge. I will PM you with some more specific quetions about VA and the tax issue.

My situtaion is that I'm due to PCS end of this year to Norfolk, VA. Still debating on whether or not to pull the trigger on this last generation E92 M3 or wait for the next iteration F80 M3/M4(?).

TO ANYONE: Does anyone know if there is a "time limit" in which we have to execute the order while overseas or can we make a purchase 1 or 2 years after we've returned back to CONUS from an overseas tour?

Black OPS,

Coming from Japan and headed to Norfolk, VA. Can you amplify on the "pre-purchase ability" you mentioned in your last post and how that works?

I'm leaning towards waiting for the next F80 M3/M4(?) b/c of the anticipated fuel efficiencies + performance. I'd like to 'save' my military overseas purchase for later when the next model comes out and this pre-purchase ability you mentioned sounds like the best way to execute this military BMW purchase.

Superior Motors will also hook you up, they have a dealership outside the NSA. Be sure to place your order while deployed. All Military car sales should be the same pricing. I had mine delivered to GA, no issues.
