Apple iPad
Apple will sell its newly unveiled tablet-style iPad starting at $499.
The iPad resembles an iPhone, but larger. Apple will sell some iPad models with data plans from AT&T, with no contract required. Does anyone have pros or cons about it? Looks cool and I love my iPhone. Hate that you have to buy a date plan for it. |

$499 for 16 gb 599 for 32GB, $699 for 64GB. With 3G, add $130 to each. So: $629, $729, and $829. |

Agreed. All that hype was for nothing.

iPad = F-F-F-FAIL. No camera, no confirmed multitasking, no proper way to type. And the bezel is too big. The only thing that could save this is if there's a way to jailbreak it. Then it would be amazing. Imagine using Google voice and canceling your phone plan. Unlimited everything for 30 bucks a month? Not too shabby. But I'd wait.
Mark my words, the next iteration will have a camera. As a former early adopter, we always get screwed

I hope at least the next iPhone is more exciting.

I wouldn't call it a FAIL, just not what our demographic is looking for.
I can see this being a big hit with an older crowd (although not their typical target) or those who travel extensively. A lot of older users are intimidated and turned off by the tiny iphone, but don't want to lug a laptop around - or need all the in-depth features. Someone like my mom who only needs to do email and surf. But it's awkward. Too big to hold, it would probably move around if you put in on a table, and the screen angle can't be changed.

Very disappointing. It's just an iPod Touch with a faster processor and bigger screen (with bigger battery to power it) for $300 more! That's outrageous! Typing will be difficult, too. It's too wide to type with thumbs (maybe OK in portrait mode). To use it like a keyboard, you have to lie it flat on the table and lean over it (imagine lying the LCD you're looking at now on it's back, or opening your laptop 180 degrees). Even then, you have no tactile feedback, so forget touch-typing without the (undoubtably expensive and cumbersome) add-on keyboard.
$130 for a 3G radio is a bit high. It'd be nice if it was retrofittable, too. $30/month for data doesn't sound bad at first...similar to the iphone, but consider the purchase price of the device isn't subsidized like the iPhone, and this is less likely to be drug around everywhere like the iPhone. For e-book reading, e-ink is easier on the eyes and offeres practically unlimited battery life. Books seem to be a focus of this device. Ideally, they should've made the back side of the device an e-ink display. Alternatively, they could've basically made a replacement for the last-gen MacBook with a swivel-screen for tablet mode (like HP tablets). So, what we have here is an iPod touch with about $40 worth of extra parts in it for an extra $300. Revolutionary. |

IMO, the interesting thing about this is the gap it fills between smart phones and larger laptops. (I view netbooks as being too close to the full laptops to cover that gap).
It's just small & light enough that you could easily carry it around in a bag/car/etc without noticing the 1.5lbs weight but the screen is still big enough to actually be able to do something interesting with it. It, or similar devices that follow it, will definitely transition some people away from the traditional standalone computer (especially with the keyboard docking station). |

The rumors were right on and yet people are still shocked that it is an iPod Touch/iPhone XL? Sometimes I wonder about people's expectations......
It is what I expected it to be. 9.7" display( LED and IPS is a bonus. Also means LG is the manufacture of the display) and 3G( although optional with GPS) is what I expected. And therefore pleased with this. If I didn't have my 17" MBP, I would be tempted to grab the $499 iPad and use it to take it to class to take notes. What netbook can? You expected this to fit in your pocket? |
