Idle high pitch rotation sound - Metal on metal squeal
Happens with both belts off, tired to narrow it down with a stethoscope.
High pitch sound as if a camshaft bearing was wearing. Coming from value cover area towards front of the car where oil filler cap is. Noise is exactly as recorded here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kR_78czBH40 Potentially timing chain/vanos solenoid related? |

It's unlikely to be metal to metal sound. More likely is an intake leak. A small leak can whistle like that and many mistake it for something much worse. Check everything around the intake plenum and every connection point.

Mine does the same noise, sometimes when cold, sometimes after driving for a while. I can't hear it at all after gnetly revving the engine.
Do you suggest to remove the intake plenum and check the connection points? Where to look exactly? |

It's seems a rare problem but the few people I've had contact with haven't found a solution.
Today I took the plenum off and ran it. Don't have an exact answer as I will be doing the same again over the weekend but it's related to the idle control valve and the fuel breather valve. Now, if l clamp the rubber hose between the two, the sounds is X2 worse and I can induce it, it's not a coicendence. So restricting the feed gives maximum noise. Which leads me to think the fuel breather valve has been on its way out for a while but not broken enough to induce any unsettled idle or caused issues with a full fuel tank. I'll be doing it again to isolate if it's the idle control valve squealing or something within the head. I really hope it's the former! How long has yours been doing it? I found UK and US guys so it's not just an NA or Europe problem. Last edited by Shamza; 11-10-2017 at 01:42 PM.. |

I've had the car for just over a month now and I slowly get to know it, so not sure how long has this noise been present. My car is a US import btw.
That's interesting. My car had a clogged charcoal filter (the one connecting to the gas tank) and after replacing it with a new one it threw a code for DMTL pump failure, which was also replaced. The whole unit has a pipe running all the way to the engine bay and connecting to the fuel breather valve. Perhaps in my case the previous failure has led this unit or the idle control valve to malfunction as well, resulting in these noises. There are no fault codes however. If your car is not from USA, you don't have the DMTL pump, nor the big, fancy, way overpriced charcoal filter which can be clogged, so in your case the cause might be different. Anyway, I am very curious if you can manage to find the cause of the noises. |

Ordered a replacement Idle Control Valve, with power to it disconnected and with a friend holding the revs there is no noise.
I'll report back when changed, might be a couple of weeks though. |

It's good to hear that most likely it is not a serious issue. The sound the car makes is rather scary to hear in person.
Shamza, did you get the Idle Control Valve from a BMW dealer, or bought a VDO "replacement" (afaik this is exactly the same part, originally produced by VDO as well). I have checked and in my country this thing is completely unobtainable, both dealership and all replacement shops. Also, did you get any fault code? Were there any other issues connected with this part? |

99% sure it's aero related, like holding a blade of grass between your hands and blowing through. I've bought a used one from a 2012 model off ebay, mine is a 2008 so it's nearly 10 years old and isn't showing any other symptoms of failing other than this - no bouncing idle, no fault codes. I'll be swapping it over next weekend as along as weather permits - I'll report back for sure! |

I have found another possible solution for the problem - http://www.m3post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1162212
The sound in the video is a bit different, however I was looking for it under the hood, not under the car. Any thoughts on this? |

I dove under the hood today to listen closely where does it come from and couldn't help hearing it somewhere in the middle/back of the engine rather than in the front where the pulleys are, so I guess it's the same as yours. Plus the sound is 100% the same as in your video. That's a pity, a pulley would be cheaper.
Anyway, good luck with your idle control valve and hope to hear some news soon |

Update:
Finally got round to swapping the Idle Control Valve...Sound gone. On examining the original one, it may just be carbon build up around the butterfly causing the noise. No more embarrassing squeal |

Here is the ICV I just bought used.
Shamza how does the carbon buildup compare to the one you got and the one that was faulty? I am planning to clean it before installing anyway, but wanted to figure out how good or bad is the part i bought.

That doesn't sound good, but hopefully it will work ok after cleaning. I am waiting for the throttle body cleaner to come and then I will clean and replace the ICV. I'll post some pics of the old one too.
