Is it bad to let the car automatically downshift in S mode?
Sorry. I am a newbie. Have learnt a lot from this forum. Perhaps a silly question but when driving in S mode and you brake, the car does a pretty good job of downshifting as you slow down. Is it bad to just let the car do it?

Right. But is it supposed to more of a safety feature to protect the car (on upshift I can understand) or it something you can just make use of during your daily normal course of driving?
Specific example would be, you get to a traffic light and you just use your brakes to slow down and the car automatically downshifts for you. I find that much easier. No problems on upshifting or even downshifting if I want to quickly accelerate. Just on stopping I find it easier to let the car handle it. Just wondering if that is ok to do. |

The only annoying thing about this is sometimes if you brake too fast in a higher gear lets say 5th and it jumps to 2nd the car will get the lurch feeling. Most of the time at slow speeds its fine. I usually downshift to at least 3rd before I let the car take over. Usually do this if I don't want to blip too loud. I have a catless x pipe and gt2 exhaust so it gets loud.

It's rev matching on its own. Enjoy it.

If you drop the shift level down this effect you are feeling will all but go away. The car is lazy though.

Love the way we care for our M3s, down to sometimes unheard level of details...
Welcome aboard Cypher, your DCT will look after you pretty much any way you treat it. But as pointed out, do use the downshift rev match and you'll end up even happier! |
