Ow my i thought it would be fixed now...

Seems rather strange if they start to make an app for iphone users that only a bit of what phone can do works.

Thought that the calender etc... already would work with the combox controller.

That's what my dealer said.

Strange will ask him to inform with AG if they have this sheduled...

Yeah I know. For some reason when I'm about to spend $70k it is easy to get obsessed with the details. But truth be told, I doubt I'd miss it that much if I don't get it.

But in our defense, we are in the 6nr thread afterall.... so ya know..you don't have to click on it.

More good news or more confusion - from the X3 board, an email communication with someone at BMW UK:

Dear Mr xxx

Thank you for your further email dated January 31, 2011.

I can confirm that, so long as you have the outlined optional extras listed in my previous communication, you simply need to purchase the software update and the specifically designed snap-in adaptor for Mobile Application Preparation. This software update is not restricted to new build vehicles.

I trust this information is of assistance.

Yours sincerely

Hoping this is the case. Thanks for posting.

edit: I realize this is from the UK so I've tempered my enthusiasm appropriately

Bad news

Here is what BMW UK wrote back to me

Dear Mr XXXX

Thank you for your email dated February 3, 2011, regarding more information for the option 6NR.

I can confirm that Option 6NR cannot be fitted to the vehicle once it has been delivered. This option can only be applied at the point of manufacture, if the vehicle has USB Audio Interface and BMW Professional Multimedia Navigation System.

I trust that this information addresses your query, however, should you require any additional information or assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me again.

Yours sincerely

Somehow I am afraid that Diane and John are either the same person or Anisha and Gupta

I sent an email to BMW AG worldwide. The sad truth is that only time will tell. With so many contradictory statements being made we don't know who to trust.

Because the iphone (and Apple) don't support those features through their current Bluetooth stack implementation.

From all that I'm seeing is that most of what is being talked about is already available. What I perceive is going on is that they will just open the door to use BMW Assist to interact with the car though iPhone apps. And the reverse, use your Phone's internet access to provide app functionality to interact with the car. Also based on BMW Link, the possibility for the iPhone app to take over as the main Nav software/user interface and interact through iDrive.

Seems like the future is a dumb terminal screen and they give you a phone loaded with apps instead of a fully integrated Nav system.

Now one thing that caught my attention is a clip from I think the Paris auto show I saw a while back that showed Video running on two iPads on the back seats that were in sync with video running on the Nav screen. So the possibility of what BMW calls "BMW Out" and using the iPod Out feature seems interesting. Seems like album covers is just a start.

See this video:
There's two apps from BMW that are available now.

1. BMW Connected .. which is the App interface for the new 6NR option. Here you need the cradle.
2. BMW Remote ... among other things you can unlock/lock the door, send google map locations to the BMW navigation system. (This does use BMW assist infrastructure to provide the communication between handset and car. Your phone talks to the BMW assist servers through your app. They in turn then send data to your car using the cars built in "telephone" (Telematics control unit or Combox unit). This then sends the data to the CIC/CCC in the case of google maps, or other systems depending on the type of data). For all of this to happen, you don't need the cradle.

Its very possible we move to a dumb terminal as you say, and all the smarts are on the phone. Very possible indeed. But that would mean working with lots of different phone vendors, and software, and apps, and then version of those ..... etc. A big world of hurt for a car manufacturer. So that requires standards ... something sadly isn't there today. So for now at least, expect to see plenty of smarts within the iDrive/navigation system in the car. On top of that, BMW makes good money from charging people for it!

Yes, and finally ipod out is a function of 6NR. BMW refer to this as Plug-in. A odd choice of name.

With the announcement that 6NR = 6NF in the 03/11 production changes (not that 6NR requires 6NF) then it should be a done deal that this can be retrofitted to any 6NF/Combox equipped car.

Just get a software update and the new cradle. When the 03/11 parts database is online the baseplate P/N can be compared to make sure that they remain the same. If not then it will have to be swapped as well.

Although things seem to be moving in a favorable direction for a retrofit of some sort, I have moved to a Week 10 production adding option 6NR. BMW's silence on this issue is perplexing and creates too much speculation.

The East coast weather makes the 3 week difference negligible and I have fixated enough on this option to now ensure I get it. Hope for all here it can be retrofitted and with some firm word from BMW I would gladly grab an earlier week.

What good is a new convertible before early April here anyway

Think you made the right decision. The last thing you want to do is start messing about with pseudo retrofits on a brand new car. Its a bit different if you've had your car for a year or so.

BMW are notorious for a shambolic experience with respect to software updates .... even when they are "official". Take the X5 and the rear hitch install. It required a software update to properly install the option. However even though the parts were available, the software was not ... took them 4 months to get that sorted.
