Engine oil level getting low, recommended synthetic oil?

Hey guys,

The engine oil in my E92 M3 is at around 30% level.. What do you guys use for synthetic oil and where do you buy it from and how much do you need? I heard you need at least 8-10 quarts to fill up. Id rather not go to the dealership to buy it but if I have to I will and I have someone who can do it for me so I just need the synthetic oil. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Our car use 10w-60 which it is hard to find at regular automotive stores. Some people use different oil weight but that is another debate. Bottom line is the car use 10W-60 so I would stick to that. Your best bet is get it from the dealer, you drive a m3 and you can't afford the oil?

If the car isn't showing a low oil warning then leave it alone, don't add any till it ask for it. Even when you get that warning you're supposed to add 1L (1 bottle) max and I would add 1/4 of a bottle at a time.

When the car says low oil you're actually not low. The engine holds almost 9L of oil, and it triggers the warning when you're down 1L so there is around 8L of oil still.

If it's between the two "OK" lines, don't add anything. The sensor is not 100% reliable. You should always add 1/4 qt at a time -- don't just blindly pour in a full quart "because the car needs 9 quarts".

That being said, you can use the BMW 10w60 available from the dealership, or Castrol TWS 10w60 which was the previously-specified OEM oil. Both are available from a variety of online sources for less than the dealership price. You should always keep a bottle in the trunk.

Many purchase various brands of 10w-60 on-line. If you only need one bottle getting from a dealer isn't that bad. Some have said NAPA carries a 10W-60 Redline product, but the one I called did not have it.

If getting a set for an oil change there are many sites that have packages that include the oil filter and drain plugs. Some utilize FCP which supposedly has a lifetime replacement policy on everything including oil. I personally don't want to hassle with shipping it back.

Some NAPA stores do carry Red Line, but the 10w60 would be the exception and not the rule.

Thx everyone else for the info, so I'll probably go with Castrol TWS 10w-60 and order a whole bunch off ecs tuning website.

Sorry for not providing links. Everyone has their preferred site. ECS tends to have free shipping, FCP Euro has replacement warranty, Bimmerworld & Pelican Parts are also worth a look. Many other sites are mentioned in the forums

After an oil change, don't be surprised by some erratic readings from the sensor for a while. Mine seems to settle after parking downhill a couple of times.

Depending on what bottle shape, there is a BMW bag that holds a bottle. Has a paper funnel and other aids. Helps keep the trunk organized.

No problem thanks again for your help. I looked on Bimmerworld, they carry alot of Redline products but thinking I should just go with Castrol for the time being, will check out Pelican parts later...
