Why is the resale value so low?
Why is the M3's resale value so bad? A 2008 e92 with an msrp of around $68k can be purchased for $50k with less than 10k miles on it while a 2008 s5 that retails for $10k less sells for the same price with less then 10k miles on it.

In any case, I would surely expect that the M3 depreciates quite a lot in this economic environment (especially the first year or two) but over time it should stabilize. Don't we estimate a loss of 10-15% of the value the moment we drive off the lot??

Two things are at work.
1. The economy is in the $hitter. Wall St. types like myself who would normally buy these cars are either unemployed or looking over their shoulders for the grim reaper. 2. The S5 was made in very limited numbers. The car could've probably sold for well over MSRP if Audi was allowed to do that. Due to this small supply, it not as hurt by the decrease in demand out there.

Do you guys think its wise decision to buy a FULLY Loaded 2008 E92 M3 with sunroof... for 49k with HRE p40's and stock 19''s I want to keep the car 6-12 months and then sell it... How much of a hit do you think I will take later on...
And I want to factor the decision of selling the HRE 19'' Wheels that could probably be sold for 2-3k... |

You buy cars like this for different reasons, the primary one being you really want to enjoy it and use it a lot, preferably as your daily driver. It should be capable of putting a smile on your face nearly every day. Possible later resale value should be near the bottom of the list, and that is a constantly moving target which is about as easy to predict as the weather on a particular day two months from now. Certain cars get "hot" at certain times, and demand goes up. The S5 is currently one of those cars. A year from now, people will likely be over the novelty. Historically, Audis have depreciated pretty quickly.

I would not buy a new car I was only planning to keep for six months, under any circumstances. Maybe if slightly used but only if it was a screaming deal.

I doubt S5's are really selling for that, but like someone else said: novelty.
Those cars are no R8's and will be in the ~$30-35k range within a couple years. |

As BMW cuts production, new M3 car prices stabilize, and economy starts to recover, used M3 prices will improve.
As far as that S5 comparison, something wrong with those numbers. Maybe a base car. You have to be an idiot to pay that for an S5. At any rate, an isolated incident doesn't determine the market; there'll always be people in a bind. Can't worry about that. Good day. |

Im looking more and more at a slightly used 09 E90 M3 but it has to have 95% of what Im looking for. It would be nice to just jump in and be able to hit the gas and go. Its also worth the enjoyment of buying new as well... decisions, decisions......

No one was selling anything used at a compelling enough price, so I went with a new car for less than what some were asking for used ones...
