Didn't realize how noisy Pirelli tires were...

I got a flat in the drivers side rear tire last night. I had the stock Pirellis with about 17K on them. I ended up putting on Michelin Pilot Sports on and OMG. It seems like the exhaust note got louder, but I think it's only that I can finally hear it.

first of all, my pzeros were donezo at 7500 miles. i think that maybe you were riding on them much much too long. i thought they were very good tires though, but did last long enough.

pss are the benchmark though.

hmm, haven't noticed a difference. I've used stock Pirellis, PSS, PS2, and S04s, all sounds about the same

They still had good tread. Must've run over something, then the sidewall got damaged. I didn't replace the fronts yet, and they still have plenty of tread depth.

Yea Pzeros are really noisy, but they look so good that (side profile). I got Michelin Super Sports now and they are much quieter.

Swapped mine with only 9K miles and they were shot. Cracking all over the place. Same deal as yours plenty of tread left.

Also, beyond the differences between brands/types, a lot of tires get noisier and ride worse as they age and wear. Tires that can't be rotated get odd wear patterns and cupping with some cars. I've found that putting a new set of the exact same tires on a car improves the ride noticeably.

Personally, Pirelli is not a favorite brand for bikes or cars.

For now, yes. I'll have to order the PSS for the front. Nobody had them in stock except for the BMW dealer, and the quoted me a crazy price.

I had experience with Conti Sports 3, PS2, and PSS in this order. My experience was CS3 was noisier but not by much than the others. PS2 and PSS are much softer, PSS is even better than PS2. CS3 winter experience was much better, better traction on snow compared to the others. PS2 on wet was not fun, PSS is good when wet but not as good on snow. (and it is not intended for snow). I will stick with PSS going forward. I get about 16-18k miles at the rear until i hit the wearbars. Now i am in houston, so i dont mind having so used tires, but in northeast i would change them after 14-15k. front ones last much longer

After reading your post, I was concerned about the noise factor, too. My P Zero's were down to the wear bars. I just had a new set of P Zeros installed, and they are much qiuter than the old ones.

I bought the car used and had no idea what the new tires would sound like.

I like the P Zeros, seems that the engineers at BMW did too!

After driving it for almost a week with the Michelins, it's amazing how much lower the road noise is. I thought I was going to need to change the exhaust, turns out all I needed was new tires.

I've had friends tell me that when I would drive past them, all they really could hear were the tires and possibly the air intake. They suugested that I get some louder (throaty) exhaust system.

I may stiil have to do so......
