You should look into replacing the h&r springs for a full coil over set if you plan on tracking more in the future. K&W V3's make a HUGE difference.

Hey Linda,

It was nice to meet you yesterday you really are an enthsuiast. Happy I could help get that mark off of your clear bra on the bumper.

Here is a link to a good Low profile jack like we spoke about: Low profile floor jack

Here is a link for a Torque wrench that should work fine for you as well: 1/2" Torque Wrench You will need a 17mm 1/2" drive socket for wheel lugs and the torque spec is 90 Ft/Lb....... Your husband can show you how to properly torque the wheels.

P.S. Make sure you get that clear bra installed on your hood before your track day...... would be a shame to wreck that nice paint work IND did for you. Most of all, Have fun..... that is what tracking is all about!!!

Sounds like it all worked out - excellent.

[STARTFIGHT]

Not sure about the digital torque wrench though - there are cheaper manual options from Sears/Craftsman or Kobalt Pro...or the coilovers quite yet!

while we're starting fights, I'll continue. Here's another 2-ton low profile aluminum jack that's $160 compared to the $420 for the above jack.

I own one and I'm happy with it.

BTW, I agree with BMRLVR, a clear bra is a must.

I'm also new to tracking and will be signing up with speed ventures either at Cali speedway or willow springs. I've got ps2's that are about 1/16" above the wear indicators In the rear and about 2/16" above in the fronts. I figured a first-time track day would be a good excuse/way to wear the current ones out so I can move to the fresh set for next track day. Does anyone advise this approach?? According to tirerack "As any autocrosser or racer who has tread rubber shaved off of his tires will tell you, low tread depth tires respond quicker."

thanks for your advice.

Tire Rack's statement is correct but refers to new rubber. A slick tire has the most grip and a shaved tire will also offer more grip than a comparable tire with full tread blocks. That all assumes new rubber. A tire worn down through use to the same tread depth as a shaved tire will not offer the same grip. Doesn't mean you can't use it, just be prepared for a potentially very slippery feel. For your first track day it should be fine.

Well OT we go...

I recently bought a aluminum racing style jack myself. I did TONS of research based on the enormous price range you can find for identically appearing products. My research led me to find a plethora of horror stories about jack longevity and the availability of replacement parts. Cheap jacks tend to develop main seal problems REALLY early in their life and then have to be tossed. Harbor Freight is known for throw away tools as well. I'd never buy a jack from them and would be darn sure to use jack stands if using one and crawling under the car.

I went with the cheapest jack I could find that had a lifetime warranty AND oofered a full set of replacement parts. OTC - SPX 1532 Aluminum Racing Jack - 2 Ton. You can get one for about $250. Some OTC jacks are made in the USA but I am not sure about this one in particular. However, with the warranty and replacement parts I don't really care where is was made.

I don't trust any jack with my life no matter how much it costs.

FWIW, I know an editor of a car magazine, who recommend that jack to me. I know he's used that jack extensively, and if it's good enough for him, it's good enough for me.

You must be aware that Harbor Freight is fairly well universally known for "throw away" quality tools, right? I don't care if the Pope recommended a Harbor Freight jack to me I would not buy one. I have the same opinion regardless of whethere or not you use it on conjunction with jack stands.

Sorry to contribute to the OT. The tone was certainly kept civil and there was nothing like a war. Many threads here do wander back and forth among topics. I did start a jack thread in the maintenance section. Cheers.

I forgot to add, will be going into IND this friday for the clear bra, won't take chances. Also wondered about the coilovers, if needed down the road. The help regarding the jack is appreciated, I remember seeing a thread a while back about this but since this is all about the noobie girl on the track anything you guys help me out with is much appreciated. It's nice to have it all in one section. I have been getting cold feet lately about the 9th but it's something I have always wanted to do. The hardest thing I think is getting used to the helmet and it's really hot. It isn't a great look either btw on the hair and makeup lol

I would absolutely use the track as an excuse to finish up your tires. As long as it's not a wet track slick or low tread tires work best and have less heat build up than full tread tires. As long as there are no cords showing continue to track them.

DAMN!! $400+ for a jack? Got mine at Costco and they're manufactured local to me in case it brakes. Costco should also cover it with their own warranty.
A decent torque wrench should be about $30-50 and don't forget at least a 3 inch extension to clear the fender.
I'd also get a Colgan old school bra for $150 for track days. WAY easier than tape and a marked up clear bra is just as bad as chipped paint.

Come out to Las Vegas with the BMWCCA in early October. It's a GREAT way to get on the track.
I think swamp had issues with is PS's that were pretty low at the track.

ok question about the costco jack, is it low profile? Also this has probably already been covered but when I get my track wheels I should go for 18" right?

18s would be best but don't think they will clear your bbk.

EDIT - Sounds like there are a couple of options that would clear the 380.

Damn. I just checked online and Costco doesn't carry it anymore. I know I've seem something in the warehouse that was low profile too.

Here are some alternatives: http://www.northerntool.com/shop/too...ift-race-jacks

You can usually get a cheap torque wrench from Kragen/Pepboys/Autozone and they usually carry the 3-5" extension and 17mm deep socket. Make sure it fits your wheels before you leave since you may need a thin walled socket.

Might as well get a couple wheels hanger's too. They make getting the wheels on so much easier. http://www.ultimategarage.com/shop/p...roducts_id=295

The RS Tecknic one's are too thick for my RAC wheels, but may fit your BBS. They fit the stock and APEX track wheel without problem. The Ultimate garage ones should fit all wheels since they're thinner.

Then you'll need a decent tire pressure gauge. Maybe something like this, which is pretty cheap and has a bleeder valve which is nice at the track: http://www.amazon.com/JOES-TIRE-PRES...A2IS69AN9A0OWP

BUT, shouldn't you have an air compressor at home too since you'll be letting so much air out of your tires on a hot track day? Besides, who want's all the water/moisture in their tires that you get at the gas station? That's probably another $100 for a simple air compressor. Since you have the air compressor, then maybe you might as well splurg on a tire pressure gauge that will allow you to read the pressure while you're inflating and bleeding air out, like this one: http://www.amazon.com/Longacre-Racin...A1FRSYX6K938O2

It starts to add up quickly.

She could get VOLK's and CCW's. The new TE-37 SL run just under $3,000 for a set and people have been able to get CCW's for around $2,500.
