My temp is usually in the rang of OP when I am in stop and go traffic, regardless of outside temperature.

I too have been wondering it is normal. From the responses on this thread. Seems to be?

Whatever, Scrippy.

Thanks everyone else. This is sort of where it ends up, no matter how I drive it (ie sitting in traffic on a hot day, or in the case of a photo, driving on a 20-30 mile trip on the highway, not pushing it, just cruising in 5th gear on a cool-ish morning for Atlanta). Hot day, in traffic, reads here. Cold day, on highway, good airflow, not driving aggressively, reads here.

The car used to remain stable around 210, as did my now departed E93 M3.

Oil is right between high/low via IDrive. Hmm. I'll add and see.
Have you checked thermostat? How old are your fluids? Have you hit anything or ran over anything that hit the bottom of your car? Oil temp gauge in our cars is a combination of oil and coolant. Also low trans fluid could generate heat seen on the gauge. I would check fluid levels and change coolant if it's old. Also look for impacted oil cooler lines or impacted trans cooler lines. If any of the lines were hit by something on the road it's easy for them to bend a metal hose fitting and possible putting a fold on it which will decrease flow volume.

I just can't ever recall cruising at that speed and holding Rpm's at 4,000. Could this be why OP is running a bit hotter, as I have never seen my gauge go over 210 on normal day to day driving regardless of the duration of the drive . Also I imagine the M3 would just guzzle gas at that rpm.
You're not alone here mate, another lazy bastard over here preferably keeping rev down when cruising. Not that it comes low even in 7th gear but anyhow.

Ps. Proper gas consumption still kept though.

My 2008 with 26k miles does get above 210 too, almost as high as yours. I only drive around town so low speeds with the 80+ weather out here in socal seems to be the culprit.

92F and pushing the car pretty hard. 210 is as high as I've seen.

Going to try to post this so it makes sense. Car was fully warmed up and driving at highway speeds. Data taken straight from Carly and while the gauge appears high, the engine temp does not go over 200 and if it is indeed an average of coolant and engine, something is not jiving.

This may be a case if insufficient data, maybe the coolant was not at hot as it could have been?

OP thanks for posting this and I am not trying to hijack the thread, looks like we have the same issue. .

Oil level is fine, no leaks or damage anywhere.

Just now. Cruising around town. Normal driving on side streets, no redlining or fast driving. Even a bit higher. I'm going to chk everything ie coolant, do an oil change, chk for bent oil cooler pipes underneath -- as it's 100% hotter than last summer or anytime in recent history I can remember.

Something is up methinks. I'll report back.

Here's mine after driving around for around 40 mins. Then sitting in line for 8 mins at Starbucks... Mine never goes above this unless it's 105+ outside or I'm tracking the car. Although I have changed out my thermostat and flushed my coolant around 20k ago.

Seems high to me. Usually doing the driving you are describing I might be at 210+/- a tiny bit. I'm curious what your coolant temp is at the same time. Do you have icarly?

I think that's a bit high, does it stay at that temp or does it slowly creep upwards?

Usually mine stays a hair below 210 but in the summer in LA gridlock traffic it'll climb maybe 1-2mm past 210. Never had mine go as high as yours unless I'm hammering the car.

Just use 10w60, change the small coolant gasket on the pipe in the front of the engine leading to the thermostat and burp air out of the system. That worked for me, I had the same problem with creepy temperatures.

I live not far from you in Columbia. We are always several degrees hotter than atl yet I've never seen temps that high unless really flogging it. Last year when my engine blew I did notice increased temps in that range. Not trying to scare you because it could be anything but in my case I knew something was up because highway speeds with clean air still resulted in higher temps than city driving, which is the opposite of the way it should be. Do you notice if it gets hotter on the highway than it does around town?

I don't think that's correct especially when my known water temp is 192-195 and oil 210+
He is 100% correct actually. Plus a trans low on fluid could produce heat and induce it on to the motor as well.

Timothy, did you try "Output value for motoroeltemperature"? I find this to correlate very well with my gauge. While the "Motor temp" seems to be coolant, coming up sooner in temp but staying below the oil temp.
Never got the "Coolant" on Carly to work btw but pretty sure above gives whats needed i.e oil and coolant temp separately.

Cheers

I did not know that. my water gauge seldom goes above 195 at the most 200 then drops quickly to 195. the oil gauge in the cluster is frequently above 210. so when the track guys are at the third dot or slightly higher, does that mean it's still averaging both?

Don't think OP has an issue but clearly there is quite a bit of variation. just for reference here is mine after 30-40 minutes. Given today's heat I would say this is above normal for me. Typically the needle is slightly below the 210 mark.

Definitely not normal. It's been 105-110 here and I still only see those temps after a redline run or 2. Good luck.

He's talking coolant temp. You can get coolant temp from a p3 gauge or icarly app.

There are too many variables, driving style being the critical one. Here are couple of pics taken 20 minutes apart after about 2 hours of driving.

To OP, I wouldn't worry about it unless you're noticing changes in drivability or getting some sort of overheating warning lights/messages but that's just me. Make sure your coolant and oil level are good and enjoy the car.

Correct, I leave my p3 set to coolant temp during the summer months.
