2011.00 e92 M3 with 35k km or 22k miles never tracked ... they closed the local track, regular oil changes, never beat on before its fully warmed up, winter driven one year only

Recently replaced mine. Glad I did. Now I can sleep at night.

2011.5 w/ 59.5k miles. Some of the bearings were worn to their final layer. There was also so heat spotting and pitting.

Many thanks to Malek@MRF

Had mine done recently. 2013 27k miles, good record on oil changes etc. The width on the bearings isn't visibly thinner or anything but clearly there is wear. Top bearings seem more worn than bottoms. Went with BE as a replacement and seems like money well spent to me.

I warm up slow (idling long enough for the tachometer to settle and the cold start routine to subside) staying around 3,000 RPM and no more than 40% throttle (20% maximum in first gear) until the needle hits the first tick on the gauge, then up to 4,000 RPM and 50% throttle, little more juice when the oil level sensor completes, and finally drive it like it should be driven after the needle gets to around 210F. Car is daily driven, parked in a garage at night, and as posted elsewhere I use an oil pan heater below about 25-30 degrees F. Oil for the first 7,000 miles was BMW MTwinPower Turbo 10w60 then over to Castrol TWS/Supercar 10w60 for the next 4,500 miles. Two UOAs of the BMW MTTP 10w60 are here https://www.m3post.com/forums/showth...310230&page=42. Of the 12,000 miles approximately 1,000 were on the track in temps between 30F up to 95F ambient. Car is stock and I track on MPS4's and Akebono Euro Ceramic pads, so I'm not wringing it out like the best on here, but I do push it pretty hard. Malek noted these are the bimetal bearings (Build date is 09/10) and that I was into the second layer with some pitting. Car is also a 6MT and the one discussed here https://www.m3post.com/forums/showth...1414718&page=2. Malek and MRF are absolutely the best and a pleasure to deal with.
Whats the mileage on the car. I only saw that you have had the car for 12k miles.

Sorry if I missed it.

Dave

Not bad especially considering your mileage.

2011 e90 M3 67xxx miles

Finally got around to getting my bearings done by Malek at MRF. He was extremely helpful and knowledgeable.

He made the process extremely stress free and seamless. I would recommend him in a heart beat. I can finally rip this bad boy to 8400 rpms stress free! I will get some more detailed pictures of the bearings once I get a chance

Sadly, "not bad for an M3" is more correct. In general, those bearings are totally unacceptable given the low mileage.

Yep I did. 37k miles, similar shape or maybe better, hard to judge from pictures. Would have hold for plenty miles more Im sure but like you figured cheaper to do them too early than too late. Also interesting to confirm that current maintenance and useage style seems fine. On top bought the car with 11k on the clock so wasnt sure about previous treatment. All good now.
What shells and bolts did you end up using mate?

Yes, I forgot to mention that I purchased my car with around 50k miles and the previous owner supplied me with a Manila folder with mostly all the previous maintenance done and his oil changes were about 5-7500 tops. So from what I can tell is it was "well maintained" to a certain extent.

I went with what Malek recommended which was the Clevite Calico CT-1 Coated Extra Clearance Rod Bearing Set.

How about you?

Sounds good. Went with ACL Race/extra clearance and ARP 625 bolts.

An interesting observation I made was a couple of the old upper bearing shell's breaking line was sticking out about 0.5 mm from the rod's breaking line upon opening up, while the lower counterparts were perfectly flushed. My understanding is that even if they weren't perfectly flushed during installation, upon tightening the lower half of the rod will push the upper half flushed and vice versa, I did one not so flushed, tighten and loosen and found it completely flushed.

So the fact that the upper shell started getting misaligned might be a sign that it's about to spun?

Not necessarily. These are fractured rods. their separation lines are not always in the same spot, but since the bearings are always the same dimensions there may be some of the shell protruding past the parting line. Doesn't matter once they're assembled and it doesn't mean they started to spin.

Hello

Sorry if it's posted already as I am sure it is some where. Can you guys recommend a brand of rod bearings to use if I decide to replace my OEM bearings? I am engine illiterate so I cannot determine why one brand would be better then the next. Please school me if you don't mind. I am reading that some bearing have more clearance so engine oil can get in there easier to lessen wear. Some aftermarket bearings are treated or coated to strenghten the bearing from stock. Anything else that would make one brand better than the other?

I have 08 with 45k miles and I just received my first oil analysis report where lead has increased by a significant amount from prior oil analysis reports.

The bearings on this thread are:

BE
ACL
WPC
VAC (Calico)

Which set do I buy??

I read it's suggested to replace the motor mounts as you replace the bearings. Can you recommend a brand?

Thanks
