M3 = 4.9 only?
hello forum;
I was reading couple of days ago the press release of the new M3. Impressive by the way. ;-) I get to the point where the specs came out and Im not saying that is not a good number 4.9s / 0-60mph... but correct me if I'm wrong. I read several reviews of our blessed 335i and couple of tested cars reach the same number. I guess is the same "conservative" marketing startegy of BMW, and if is the case, the 335i officialy gets 5.4 (non-offical 4.9) so, the new M3 officially is 4.9 (non-official____ ? ) have all an Ultimate Driving Day! |

1) The new M3 is quoted as 4.8, not 4.9
2) A 335i is quoted as 5.5 and we've seen them run 4.8 stock. 3) You do the math.

That would be cool, but not going to happen unless BMW is WAY off on their quotes. Too much weight, not enough power for it. At the stated weight and HP, 4.3-4.4 is realistic and would be 4-5 tenths faster than they are stating now.

OK, I keep seeing the different numbers and people comparing early M3 stated numbers vs. actual e46 M3 and 335i numbers.
First off: the 4.8s number for the new M3 is 0-100km/h which as e90Fleet pointed out is 0-62mph NOT 0-60mph (yes, there is a difference).
e90Fleet - can you please correct me if I'm wrong? By stated number, I'm referring to numbers from the BMW website(s) and brochures. So, my *guess* is that the stated number for the e92 M3 0-60 would be 4.6s, but real world would be ~4.4s. I get the feeling it won't be as understated as the 335i is.

Given the released HP/TQ figures and graphs for the '08 E92 M3, I think most ppl agree that the new M3 will probably do 0-60mph in ~ 4.3-4.6 sec. and 1/4 mi. in ~ 12.5-12.9 sec. However, we can all speculate about this for the next 5+ months until the '08 M3 actually arrives at dealers.
Yes, Shinobi may be right...most likely, the performance figures won't be quite as understated as they were for the 335i, since the 335i has been and is STILL CURRENTLY selling along side the current E46 M3 (with 333HP and much less TQ than the 335i) until the new '08 M3 arrives. BMW would like to sell ALL remaining E46 M3's off dealer lots before the new E93 M3 arrives, and this would be difficult to accomplish had they announced the 335i has as good or better performance figures than the outgoing M3 for $10k+ less! BMW must not have dummies in their marketing dept.

BMW quotes an average newbie driver 0-60.
Most good testers have the new M3 0-60 at 4.5; just a tad slower than M5's 4.2 sec. BMW site shows 335 coupe at 5.3mt 5.5 at, and 335 sedan at 5.4mt and 5.6at. We all know that this is wrong. The old e46 M3 is 5.0 0-60. And the new M3 is way faster. I assume 4.5 0-60 is a lot more accurate. The 335 is constantly putting out 4.8coupe and 4.9 sedan 0-60 times; with 1/4mile at 13.5 sec. Don't worry the new M3 is going to be insanely fast for a 3-series; M or not.

Sure, everyone wants their car to be fast, but IMHO it's completely missing the point of any BMW, let alone the M3, to obsess about the 0-60 time...

Just received the May issue of Road and Track. The cover article is the new M3. They are estimating 4.5 sec for 0-60 mph and 12.5 sec for 1/4 mile.

New M3 will do faster sprints than 4.8 with some driving styles changed. Clutch dump launch methods would do in 4.6 I guess...
And the new 335i doing 0-60 in 4.8 is by torque breaking. You rev the engine like 2500rpms when you re hard on the brakes, and then release the brakes. But this is a very inapropriate way to drive a car, which can end up with a burnt auto tranny... Also dont forget that in 2008 M3 will have a DCT, which will change things dramatically...

0.3 - 0.4 seconds faster 0-60 as the 6MT will require one shift to get to 60 (or 100) (speed at redline in 1st is only 42 mph)! This is simply the amount of time lost during a pretty quick 1-2 shift. A pretty huge benfit IMO. |

Seriously, look at 1/4 mile trap speed. The new M3 is probably going to trap at 112-114mph. Compare that to the previous M3 or the 335i. |
