So there I was on the Nurburgring … (Achtung: Fire Inside)

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
So there I was on the Nurburgring minding my own business and enjoying my latest Euro Delivery M3 when all the sudden I see none other than the new M5 Ring-Taxi’s bright headlights in my rear-view mirror. I slowed to watch it drift the two corners I had just passed and admired the hooligan-ism. I was not going to risk damaging my car trying to stay ahead of it so I yielded and let him overtake (0:40 in video). Briefly, I attempted to give chase, but in the rain the Green Hell is just too unpredictable for a rookie like me to push my car to its limits.

Update: All the pictures from this Euro Delivery trip, beyond those that are just automobile related can be seen at http://www.msportworld.com/2012eurodelivery.html

Being my second Euro Delivery in the past 2 years, I must say that the magic was still the same as the first one. However, unlike my first review/write-up I’ll spare any other travel details that are not automotive related, after all, isn’t that why we are all here reading these forums.

Here’s a brief summary of my itinerary:
31 March – Frankfurt Arrival -> Amsterdam via Train
01 April – Amsterdam -> Berlin via Train
03 April – Berlin -> Munich via Train w/visit to M-Studio in Garching
04 April – Delivery Day -> Milan via M3
05 April – Milan -> French Riviera via M3
07 April – French Riviera -> Geneva via M3
08 April – Geneva -> Nurburgring via M3
09 April – Nurburgring Day -> Frankfurt via M3
10 April – Headed back home to the USA

It was quite the whirlwind of a journey to see so many places in one trip…but you only live once right? If I were to do it again…I’d just take more days off and spend more time in each place.

Also...SPECIAL THANKS TO RYAN, FRANCESCA, GOLFFRR, AND ALL THE FOLKS AT STEVE THOMAS BMW WHO HELPED MAKE THIS ALL POSSIBLE!

Without further ado…pictures of the car on delivery day and followed with M-Studio and the Nurburgring.

M-Studio Visit

Although it is not very big the BMW M-Studio located in Garching just outside of Munich is worth a visit if you are ever in the Munich area. Just walking down the street you know you are about to go somewhere worthwhile as there was a fine selection of nice BMWs parked on the street.

Although I kept pushing my luck trying to see what was in the garage in the back hoping to catch a glimpse of the F80 M3…no cigar.

However, I was able to see the new M6 before its NYIAS International Debut…what a treat

I also got the opportunity to feel like one of the spyshot photographers snapping some pics of partially camo’ed M6s outside of the M-Studio.

Nurburging the Green Hell

HTTP://SAVETHERING.ORG

After driving the Ring last year I have determined that driving the ring may have to become an annual event…sort of like an annual pilgrimage from the US to the Ring. Yes, it is that good and no matter how many times you drive it each corner seems different than what you remembered last time. Since I was there on a rainy day, it was actually quite funny to see that the weather changes depending on what portion of the track you are on.

I stayed at the Hotel Am Tiergarten owned by the Schmitz family and dined at their wonderful Restaurant Pistenklause. Staying here not only allowed me to see the Ring from my hotel room but also gave my M3 the opportunity to make some new friends.

SPECIAL THANKS TO THE HOTEL AM TIERGARTEN FOR A WONDERFUL STAY!

Nearby, is the coveted BMW M Nurburgring Test Center. Unfortunately, I did not spy anything testing while I was there but that didn’t stop me from taking a plethora of pictures anyway.

When I visited the Ring the next day…I found the Ring Taxi to be up and running…unfortunately I passed on the opportunity to pay for a ride.

And a few more parting shots of the car….

Nice car. Love that fire orange. Are you keeping the stock silver 18s on it?

I have to say, when I read the thread title, I thought you were talking about a crash on the ring. Then when I started reading your story I thought you were going to say you crashed into the ring taxi. Glad that was not the case!

Just fantastic what else can one say now that you are back in the good US of A I bet this will be your favourite spot to visit until you reunite with your fine car.

Congratulations and thank you for sharing this with us

Cheers, Rolf

BTW smart move to take it easy on the N-Ring the weather conditions were not ideal to say the least.

I LOVE the spartan configuration. My car on order is semi-spartan-ish too. Minus the fire orange of course!

Great video too. Really nice to actually see the Nurburgring at a speed most "tourist" ED drivers would probably drive at... beautiful view. Looks like you had the track almost to yourself. And oh, what an engine sound, even when it's relaxed.........

Got some matte black APEXs in a square set-up sitting in my office at the moment waiting to go on. Going with a lightweight track set-up.

Talked to this guy last year, although I didn't see him this year. Idaho firefighter that keeps a car with a brother that lives in Germany so he can go drive the Ring whenever he gets a day off. Not a bad idea...if I could I probably would too.
