Dawn to wash ur car??

Is this good? I have mixed feelings about using dish soap to clean the M.

My dad swears that it burns the paint and 8-10 years later it just fades and peels off.....We have 3 cars in the family that have paint coming off...He says, cuz those are the cars we washed for him using diswashing soap when we were kids....My dad also has 2 cars that are 25 years old that he said we never touched and the paint looks BRAND NEW.

Whats wrong with just buying regular meguires car wash soap and then wax or Zaino over it??

please chime in. thx

I only use the dawn (the original, non lemon) to strip all of the wax from my car once a year. I have never heard of it destroying paint before.

Its not meant for auto paint but dishes. Will strip some waxes not all though. If you need to strip wax use an IP Alcohol wipe down. Regular car washing should be done with a good quality car wash soap (Meguiars is fine).

Dawn also dries out seals over time with repeated use, compared to a wash designed for cars. Squeaks and leaks...

I find it odd that Zaino recommends it to prep the car before wax.

"Wash the car, going top to bottom, with Dawn Ultra® liquid detergent."

Ohh, wax is as bad as dish soap. Wax is soft causing dirt to stick. Avoid the wax and just use a polish.

When I had my '07 335I, I found a few things about Zaino strange. The Dawn thing happened to be one of them, the other was that they only recommended 100% cotton towels to remove the stuff and even added cotton applicators to apply it. No mention of micro fiber. I think that's what led to me swirling the shit of it. Jet Black didnt help either.

I doubt that Dawn has any significant effect on the paint. What it does is strip off the wax. If you always wash with Dawn, then your paint is going to die a quick death due to never being protected.

No, why do you think you need to strip the wax from your car every year. Wax is soft, especially when heated by the sun. Dirt sticks to the soft wax.

The only product I have used on the finish of my cars for many years is Evercoat Body Magic hand glaze. It leaves no residue and makes the car shine as if it were wet.

The same logic applies to wooden furniture. No wax. It leaves a residue that traps dirt. High-end furniture manufacturers discourage waxing.

So let me see if I understand you correctly. You are comparing automobile wax over a non-porous surface (paint) to Pledge over a porous surface (wood). Then you recommend some product none of us have ever heard of; perhaps a product you have a vested interest in? No? Of course, all of that carnuba the world's best detailers use is total crap.

Are you really that clueless that you don't know the difference between a glaze and a wax or sealant? or auto wax and furniture wax? or what polish does compared to glaze compared to wax or a sealant? or are you just a troll? If Evercoat leaves no residue how does it fill swirls as advertised, and what protection does it give? In no way does a high quality carnuba (which is extremely hard) wax or sealant attract dirt nor does dirt stick to it, when applied and then removed from a car's finish. Nor do you need to strip wax yearly. Where did you hear that? From everclear. Really just a completely dumb post

Can't you just use a concentrated dose of car shampoo to strip the wax?

Washing-up Liquids (Detergent)

Dawn® and similar type washing liquids chemistry relies primarily on detergent and surfactant technology. This type of chemistry has advanced to the point that it can be engineered to specific soils (i.e. organic grease) Detergent and soap chemistry and product formulation is a lot more complicated than this, suffice it to say; modern car wash formulations are automotive soil specific.
It was initially used to remove traces of the oils from waxes commonly used on Nitrocellulose Lacquer paints, this is probably the reason some ‘mature’ painters recommend its use (old habits die hard). Obviously time has changed and advanced auto wash concentrates and paint cleaners are available and likely better to use. Modern clear coat is porous so I would not recommend using a harsh dishwashing detergent such as Dawn® on a regular basis, as they contain a degreaser, although most of them are approx pH 8.0.

The MSDS indicates that this product contains sodium hydroxide, and salt crystals could be mildly abrasive when they 'come out' of the compound later and will then permeate the pant surface. Salt is hygroscopic and highly alkaline, the same ingredient are used in engine degreasers to chemically ‘burn’ hydrocarbon oils and grease from engine surfaces. Sodium hydroxide will severely stain aluminium, magnesium, etc other ingredients and will tend to oxidise the paint system and emulsify, breakdown and leach out oils found in rubber moulding, trim and the paint system, which causes the plasticizers to dry out causing them to lose their flexibility and eventually fail
Generally you should avoid the use of household cleaning products for automotive detailing as they are formulated for an entirely different type of cleaning.

[Your car surface and the dirt that gets on it are a lot different from the food soils and dishes that dishwashing liquids clean effectively. We don't recommend them for cleaning your car] Proctor and Gamble
