Back in an M3

Long time, no check-in

So, I went from an E93 M3, to an E90 M3, to a Tesla P85+ (which I don't care what anyone says, is an awesome car), to an E92 M3 again.

Only did the move because my Tesla was written off in an accident, loaned it out and that was the thanks I got. Couldn't find another to buy and so I said screw it, M3 for me.

Pic attached. Thanks to the previous owner (Ian), the car is mint and I am happy, 2011 with 83K

I loved it. I will buy another again, the current M3 is a stop gap for a while simply because I could not find another Tesla Model S P85D with the right spec at a reasonable price. My second most loved car is the M3, the one I just got makes it my 5th version of an E9X platform. I can't speak for others, but for me, every time I drove/drive my M3, I always had this little anxiety in the back of my head, I would stress about dumb things like the RB's, was I on schedule for the oil change, what in anticipation was the car going to need in the coming months, who had the best price for the parts, where was I going to get the parts from in a hurry if needed, blah, blah, blah.

With the Tesla, that didn't exist, the car virtually requires nothing, just brakes, tires and the occasional pass through the service center for a suspension check-up. The Tesla was blindingly fast, off the line, basically, you win no matter what (except against another Tesla spec'd better) for highway merges, lane changes, easements, whatever...people in reasonably quick cars didn't even bother.

The tech on the car was awesome, mine was older 2014 so it had AP1 autopilot which handles the highway with ease, you could turn it on and let the car drive itself occasionally having to touch the wheel so it knew you were paying attention. The regenerative braking was great, the car used the AC motor to control stopping versus the brakes in conditions where you were in traffic, for example, my previous Tesla I drove the crap out of, it had 141,000 km's when it was written off, still on the same brake rotors and pads since original.

The service program, if needed, for example I had a trim piece on the exterior of the car which needed replacing, I caught a snow bank on a right turn I mis-judged and it dislodged, I went on the app, took a picture of it, scheduled an appointment, attached the picture, hit send and 24 hours later a mobile ranger was at my house and replaced the trim piece, no fuss, no muss, didn't even charge me for it, did it as a courtesy.

As far as running costs, in my household we had my Model S Tesla, we have a Model 3 Tesla (2020), and a Model Y Tesla (2020). The Model Y is not here all the time, daughter uses it, but if I looked to my electrical bill, average per month, maybe $75 and that's being liberal with it. Supercharging on the P85D was a bit annoying, only because my model year was throttled back due to the potential for the battery overheating, my wife's model 3 can charge in near half the time mine could. Regardless, from 10% battery to 90% took 1 to 1 and a half hours at a charging station. At home, about 5 hours.

I will most certainly be buying another, this is for sure. I may keep my E92 M3, not sure as I can give it to my son provided he is responsible with it. The only thing you have to get over is no exhaust note, especially one of an S65, once I originally took delivery of my Model S, that desire of "hearing" the engine roar, went away in about 15 minutes.

The M3 is a great car, but for me, it moved from #1 to #2 the second my butt got into the driver seat of a P85D with insane+ package.

My favourite colour on any BMW, congrats!

Do you miss the open-top driving of the E93? I imagine the S65 with no sound impediments must have been intoxicating.

Was the build quality noticeable from Tesla to BMW? I'm also curious how economical it is to buy a high mileage tesla?

Build quality was really good, I think the earlier model years (sub 2016) were pretty solid, fit and finish wise. It didn't creek or rattle anymore than an M3 would, in fact better. Also, there was not a lot of buttons in the car, everything is central on the screen, so you don't get where the button symbol wears out or anything.

I love my M3, but I do really miss that Tesla.

Heard quite a few people changed back to M3's after they sold theirs. I can see why, but if you're honest, the F80 is also a mega car for the money they go for these days...
