What's up with people still talking about these cars being collectible?

They won't ever be collector's items unless you own an E46 M3 GTR or maybe a CSL.

If we all agree to define collectible as keeping value or rising in value or bringing in strong returns at auction, the list of criteria pretty much goes as this.

The car must be highly limited in production run and/or difficult to find clean examples with low miles and no stupid modifications.

Car must have a serious race winning pedigree

The buyers in decades from now must be wealthy older guys who always dreamed of owning one and never got to and will at that time pay ridiculous prices for the sake of nostalgia.

This car will be pretty fun to drive in 20 years I'm sure, but it's not going to hold value the way the 993 turbo has held value.

This is a retail practice called Price Anchoring, which exploits the human cognitive bias in decision making. Somewhat helps explain why coupons work well in retail settings as well.

Maybe they figured out that the great S65 motor will be in great demand far and wife. This is light of the new M3/M4.

Kinda like prices of 997.2 GT3's that skyrocketed with the onset of PDK only 991s.

Porsches are in a different class on production, cost, value etc. I think the similarities you draw between the M's and the GT3s respectively is valid but it doesn't equate to the same reaction in the secondary market. The market is flooded with poorly taken care of lease turn ins and poorly modded beater M3s already. This doesn't help with value retention on the E92 M3. Plus, porsche GT3 secondary markets are not nearly as fickle about being outdated. Look at the 993. Not even a GT3 but a normal C4S or turbo retains value like a CGT. I can't think of a BMW this side of 1995 that retains value except the 1M and Z8. Both SUPER limited production runs.

I'm no real pilot but have spent about 10+ years in flight sims with good addons (like PMDG), so please dont take what I said seriously I'd love to sit on your jump seat, never been to a real cockpit!

Oh and I am really scared of flying, I know exactly how many steps are involved flying a jetliner and what pilots have to go through and how many things can easily go wrong. So i try to not to fly as much as i can, i know its embarrasing.

You should try flying the stadium visual 29 or la guardia expressway 31 for some nice old school visual landing. I love doing those in my 737-800.
You don't even notice the stick after about 30 seconds. It is a non factor. The expressway is a good one. I also like the river visual 19 at DCA and the harbor visual to 29 at PWM. Makes for a little fun after doing an ILS everywhere.

Cheers!

I like it like that

OP, if you have not bought the car, I wish you good luck. Sounds like you are keen on that MW with 359m wheels and optioned.

I would recommend holding out on the car. Call every couple of days or stop by before New Years and offer your bid. If the dealer does not budge, or he sells the car, in a month or two you will find exactly the e92 you like with the mileage etc. I normally buy cars out of state to save a lot of money. Maryland car pricing is absurd. Last couple of cars I got were from BMW dealers in Virginia and New Jersey. I saved 14 k on my x5M and 5 k on my M3. Each car took me 4 weeks of searching and about 100 phone calls. No kidding.

Merry Christmas.

Now is prob the worse time to buy a used M3. Wait for the new M3/M4 to come out.
