E92 M3 Buying Guide

What are some tips / things to look out for / anything that would help me with a purchase of an M3? I want to get a 2010-2012 M3 with 60k miles, but I feel like if shit goes down the hill I might not be able to afford it. I really like the M and I will take precautionary maintenance for the Rod Bearings but I'm not sure what else goes down with this car. Everyone says getting one without insurance is an L but I wanna hear personal experiences of owning one for 60k+ miles, not recent purchases.

Mostly looking for:
1. Length owned for, mileage driven, and maintenance/repairs and their cost
2. Tips and things to look out for when checking out M's in the lot, like how do I know how well its taken care of? Oil Analysis? History? etc.
3. Any bad experiences / regrets?
4. Hows the reliability going into the 100k mileages????
5. What mileage should one usually let their M3 go at due to the costs outweighing the other factors?
Personal experiences/stories in regards to owning your M3 and how it affects your wallet are welcome. I just wanna know how much it costs to own one and if its worth it.

How did the shop diagnose the lower timing chain guide? Haven't heard of this problem before.

In a matter of 8 months, damn bro I hope it was just the fact that you were just unlucky that everything was wearing down as soon as you purchased rather than the car maintenance being this hefty

the first few months I had my car I had absolutely no issues then boom everything all at once.

Throttle actuators, injectors, door seal, rear tyres, every o ring and gasket in the engine bay.

In this same period I did rod bearings engine mounts, transmission mounts and all engine bay fluids.

I'm about to do rear diff bushings, subframe bushings and swaybars to cure rear wheel hop before something breaks.

I'm also about to do transmission oil and diff oil.

in the last month my release bearing is starting to become noisy so I've already purchased a new flywheel and clutch that's just waiting for something to break.

They were replacing the oil pan gasket and saw one of the two timing chain guides broken and replaced it for me. Glad they caught it during the oil pan gasket service!

That warranty was the best decision. I think it was just a culmination of the previous owners' neglect and the guy owned this bad boy before me sold it when he realized how much work needed to be done.

I did oil/filter, spark plugs, diff fluid, new tires (PS4S), stage 1 tune, DCT tune in first month. I thought about DCT fluid but supposedly "lifetime" and quite expensive to have fluid changed. However, a few months in, found significant DCT leak so fixed under Carmax warranty to the tune of $2k (probably overcharged due to warranty), and this included fluid of course. I bought the car at 35k miles, now 41k 8 months later. Runs like a champ!

I expect engine mounts and throttle actuators to potentially fail in next 20k miles but we'll see.

Garage List
2011 BMW X5 35d  [0.00]
2012 BMW M3  [0.00]
A couple months into ownership of an E92 with ZCP, Premium Pkg, and Cold Weather Pkg with 72389 miles.

Rod bearings replaced just in case (they were worn and tech said I caught it at the perfect time), stock felt belly pan replaced with Mporium aluminum version (excellent part for the $$), and several worn or broken interior bits (cup holder, DCT shift lever, iDrive trim ring) replaced, and FRM module replaced. Total so far is $3759.

Still pending - wheel repair and powder coat all, minor paint touch-up then correction and ceramic coat. I'm guessing around $2500 for that.

Love the car and have not had a single regret or second of buyer's remorse.

I personally wouldn't buy a car that's been in multiple accidents.

Pretty dumb to ask if the cars good then ask if you should get it inspected by the dealership.

If you're dead set on the car, which I'm assuming is because it's really cheap for an M3, take it to an independent mechanics shop that specializes in BMWs.

Like I said, I wouldn't buy the car.

Anyways that's just my opinion. Most likely others would agree you could wait and find a clean car.
