A few cars I've taken down recently...

Close buddy of mine who knows how to drive very well owns a highline car dealership and has 2-3 E46 M3s come through practically every week. Recently he picked up a 04 Silver 6 speed coupe that according to him felt stronger than any previous M3 he'd had. So of course we had to run them Results, repeatedly, was me ahead by about 2 car @ 110 or so. Did not matter if it was from a stop or roll, M3 would do well to about 60 or so and then the 335 would take over with its longer legs.

Now on to the more controversial race. I read bits and pieces of the LS2 GTO thread and frankly didn't believe that a very lightly modded 335 could take down the GTO, but apparently I was wrong. Sunday I was out to get some food and came across an LS2 6 speed GTO with an AEM intake. We raced from a roll 3 different times, various speeds ranging 20-40 mph. GTO guy knew what he was doing, his 1-2 and 2-3 shifts barked the tires hard. Cars were fairly even up to about 90 where I'd have consistently 1/2 of a car. From 90-110 I would pull out another full car to end up 1.5 cars ahead. This occured all 3 times we ran. Surprising for me and for him.

And for those who are wondering, no, my car is ever so slightly not stock

When It comes to E46 m3 Vs 335, the cars are so closely matched, it becomes the epitome of a drivers race.

Definitaly not the outcome I was expecting in the higher speeds.....as soon as the GTO goes into 4th gear I would expect it to pull ahead. Anything can happen on the street though, good kill!!

Edit: just noticed you're not even Procede'd.....sorry man, but you beat a sub par driver, not the car.

Yes, I agree a stock 335 6MT vs. an M3 6MT is a drivers race. However, my car makes about 25 whp over stock and easily pulled away as the speeds increased. I also raced a few of his SMG cars for the hell of it and they didn't do nearly as well, the race was over shortly after I layed into it. Shift times my @ss, SMG cars are always slower in acceleration.

Out of mere curioustity, what evo? IX or VIII? I rocked a IX for a while.

I've always wanted to try SMG, but I've been super happy with steptronic honestly.

SMG cars accelerate faster than Manuals. Just look at the m5 for example

It does take more skill though since SMG requires more of the driver

First of all, I am just talking about the M3. The M3 has the same transmission, the SMG one is just automated. They don't trap as fast as the 6 speeds, thats a fact. Of course in the M5 with its *7 speed* SMG will be faster against the 6 speed manual with undefeatable traction control and ratios not ideal for the powerband.

Also, there's my various races against SMG cars and the 6 speed cars always hold up better. Finally, more driver involvement in going fast with the SMG? Are you crazy? All you do put the pedal to the floor and the car shifts at redline in every gear. A monkey can pull that off.

Graphite, its an 8. Also, the step in the 335 feels like what you would expect an SMG car would feel like until you drive one. Its not all that great, especially listening to the diff thump every time the tranny wacks a shift at WOT. I wasn't impressed. Needless to say, there's a reason BMW is dumping the SMG for a dual clutch setup like Audi/VW have.

Good kill on the goat but you beat the driver. Never the less, kill is a kill.

Uh, no. I guess you havent driven any SMG equipped car and are simply assuming that its like an automatic with paddles

Ill go head to head with a 6MT M3 anyday and pull on it with my SMG M3

No you won't. I am the one he is talking about. He has driven my SMG cars. There is an obvious difference in acceleration.

I know how to drive. I have an SC300 with a T67 that runs 11.10-.20 on pump gas on street tires. I have had plenty of other fast cars from 12 sec. AWD DSM's, to 12 sec. AMG Mercedes, low 12 sec Stage 3 Audi S4, modded Z06's, and I could go on and on.

I am so familiar with M3's that I took one of mine in to the dealership to have the seat fixed because it felt like it was leaning to the left side badly (felt like I was driving sideways). When they called me to pick the car up, the tech came out to meet me. He said, "You must really know your cars because the left seat rail of this car was only about 1/16 of an inch off the factory bracket." I responded with, " Well, I do have 4 of them."
