M1 0w50 is a race-only formula and contains dangerously high levels of ZDDP. It'll poison the cats, O2 sensors, etc. Mobil explicitly says it is not for street driven cars...and this is not an example of a "streetable race product".

Why not just run TWS or the new Shell 10w60? They're BMW approved and should be more than stout enough to handle track use. (Frankly, I think 0w40 is stout enough but I know a lot of people here are terrified of it)

Do they only make a race version in that grade? No street version? The only thing that would worry me about too much ZDDP are the o2 sensors. (No cats.)

As to why the change, I hate the way the car feels on cold start with 10w-60 and the fact it takes the oil a year to get up to 210 F. Plus, while I go back and forth on this, I continue to fear 10w-60 is too thick to properly protect the bearings.

There is no "non-racing" 0w50. There is a 5w50 though.

I still put my faith in BMW's R&D and testing when it comes to the 10w60. They didn't go with that for no reason. Go read some of Doug Hilary's old posts on Bob Is The Oil Guy to see just how much joint development BMW and Castrol did on TWS.

Just my two cents.

That's my bad. I truly meant to post 5w50 not 0w50 in my first post. That's my fault.

I just came back from a late night spin, also heard the noise after a power slide, I'm hoping topping off the fluid in the morning will fix it. Did it work for you?

awful whine while decelerating/M3 or 91 camry says the blind passerby

When both accelerating and decelerating I have the whine noise that matches its pitch In sync with the rpms. I have done my best to find where its coming from and I always seem to zero in around where you would add oil. is this oil pump related? power steering pump related? could a PS fluid flush fix this?

it drives me nuts... any help greatly appreciated

You could try changing the fluid to see what happens. Worst case: you spend the hour and $50 on the fluid and it doesn't improve.

I thought I had a similar noise, I just bought a new power steering reservoir as it was pretty cheap (And contains the filter). The noise didn't go away, but hey, I got a new filter and fluid in there.

Just started getting this noise as well. Turning the wheel doesn't make any noise, the noise only happens when driving at low speeds.
Just did a full power steering flush and noise is still there...
Don't really want to replace the entire pump unless I have too.

Any ideas?

Nope, waiting for my new pump to get here lol

I tried flushing with all new fluid with alittle lsd additive and even replaced the reservoir with the filter. Put over 300 miles and no results so i ordered a pump.

ps. later found metal shavings in the fluid when i changed it so thats when i was convinced it was the pump.

Yesterday I changed the pentosin .. there is no news ... everything the same .. Looking at the reservoir I seemed to see small things shining .. I do not know if this would be metal parts .. or the fluid is like this … I put a magnet but nothing has been stuck ..

Shining objects are probably metal, won't stick with a magnet unless they're ferromagnetic. Pentosin does not have shiny flakes in it

Then it is clear that my problem is there .. since there were many tiny bright particles .. I do not know if the noise will be that ... but the power steering has a problem ... after Christmas I think I will mount a new one.
I'm still waiting for results from other users .. thanks

Long while later lol but the car has been sitting for the winter months so finally got around to replacing the pump and solved the issue.
Warmer days are approaching !

Did you check the fluid levels? Mine started whining because the level was low. All better now.

I always start with the cheaper thing so i would either see if its low or try a fluid flush. Mine only has 58k and had to replace the pump.
