I had this conundrum when looking for the 335 replacement,M6's really don't sell over here (in the real world) but tbh the rear legroom was rubbish in the M6 compared to the M3 and i need the occasional 4 seat capacity, although the V10 thing did have me for a moment decided that the V8 would suffice

First, I am not sure you can get a loaded used M6 for $80k. Even if you can, count on $2,500 per year for an extended warranty past year #4 (you're insane not to have one)

2- a car suffers the worst depreciation in years 1 and after year 4. Your $80,000 M6 after 3-4 years of owning it will be worth pennies on the dollar. Congratulations- you will own a 7-8 year old BMW worth far less than 1/2 what you paid for it. Good luck finding a dealer to take it off your hands.

3- the M3 was rated #5 of the top ten highest resale values for all cars. M6 was not even listed.

4- The M3 is not $78k, but more like $75k out the door with all taxes included.

5- and final point- the M6 is pretty fugly.

Good luck! Even though I can afford either car NEW, I am sticking with my M3!!!!!! I just can't wait to own this car

Unfortunately, I don't believe that we are going to see the fantastic residuals of the E46. I hope that I am wrong, but I doubt it.

I agree with a lot of what you are saying but sales tax should not be considered for any comparisons as it varies so much state to state.

Someone else mentioned that in a year we are going to see great deals on used M3's. I am confident that we will see great deals, but you won't see them that soon in the states. Of course, that depends on what you consider a great deal. For me it would be at least 20%, otherwise a new one makes more sense. We will not see that type of used car pricing for 2+ years.

I wouldn't buy the M6 b/c I'm not sure what the previous owner did to it and a car like an M6 is driven hard IMHO and for it to be selling w/ so low miles for so little worries me a great deal...plus I've been waiting too long for the M3 and you don't get to go to the Driving Experience if your not the 1st owner.
Driving experiance, now can you do that at any time or only when picking up the car?

The free one is only when you pick up the car.

BMW does offer various driving courses, including M School, for a fee.

Greg,

I am under the impression that even if you pick up your car at the dealer, you can still go to the PDC at BMW's expense. Is that true? I did not see the question under FAQ.

I have considered picking up my car at the PDC, but I have two issues with that. One is I always detail my own cars so that I may inspect them for damage and/or flaws before I pay for the car. The second is that I will have a clear bra installed as soon as I can and don't want to drive a few hundred miles home without one. I will only use one place for the clear bra, they do fantastic work.

I don't know the answer to that. It seems logical, but I don't know. You could query BMW Customer Service.

some of you guys are starting to sound like haters

M3 with:
Extended Leather
Metallic Paint
19" Wheels
Heated Seats
HD Radio
Ipod/USB
Premium Sound
ZPP
ZTP
$1,300 gas guzzler

= $72,350 + Tax = $78k

Would you option your M3 with anything less?
__________________________________________________ ____

Yes- I would not get extended leather and mine is AW so no metallic $. So, $75k out the door loaded (the way I want it- not someone else).

I have to comment on some things:
(1) The new car smell. GREAT POINT. It is simply priceless!!! I cannot tell you the feeling I get when I am the first owner and everything is fresh and new. It takes about 1.5-2 years to fade out.

(2) I bought a used car once in mint condition. It never had that new car feel. I was disappointed. When I told people "check out my new car" They would say "oh, cool- what year? Is it brand new?"... Thats when I would have to go through this whole story that it was used.... but I got a great deal! Everyone thought I was kind of chinsy bargainhunter.

(3) Haters? No way. M owners are not haters. I have come to find that we all love our cars with a passion (m3, m5, and m6 owners). We don't compare them one one another like it is a competition (such as the 335 guys that keep posting how their modded cars are #1 with something to prove).

What is happening here is a bunch of friendly M owners are just trying to give you some perspective. I mean, YOU did post in an M3 forum to elicit feedback, right? Well, now you got it. Sorry that it is not what you expected.

Best of luck with your certified pre-owned M. Drive it well and Happy trails!

I am counting the days until my M finally makes its way to the USA

the '06 M6s along with the M5s had its problems with their SMGs, so keep that in mind. The M6 won't be as nimble, but there is a prestige factor over the M3. Test drive one first and then decide

If it's an 07' M6, take it over the M3.

Then retro fit the rear bumper trunk and headlights to the 08'.

Here's a definitive answer to you question:

"Hi Greg,

Unfortunately not. The only way to participate without paying is to actualy take delivery of the vehicle here which included a 2 hour driving rotation.

The M5 and M6 have a driving experience that is built into the price of the vehicle and can be used within one year from the date of purchase.

The rest of the driving schools they offer here are tuition based.

Jonathan"

Since we're talkin' 80...what's another 10? Here's a slightly used DB9 asking in the 90's

DB9 owns on the 6

Another $10,000?

C'mon that's a huge jump.

Not very reasonable unless the OP can EASILY afford either M3 or M6.

I disagree. Anyone that is ready to buy a car at 80 can probably cough up a measly extra 10.

The OP mentioned he's considering the purchase, I'm not arguing whether or not he can "easily afford" the M6. I could care less.

Who says these purchases were supposed to be "reasonable"? ...lighten up Daryl

Nice recommendation OCkid, the DB9 is pure sex. I would difinitely go with that instead of the M6 for an extra $10k.

I'm new here so my opinion might not count for much, but here's my 2 cents on the new M3/used M6 debate.

In my mind some companies just specialize in a particular product or vehicle in this case. BMW has been making the M3 since the '80's and it has built a strong following. It's virtually cult-like and in a way somewhat defines the company. It's their signature car.

The M6 and M5 are both fantastic cars no doubt, but neither have the slightest bit of interest to me. I can afford either no problem, but they are somewhat of an extension of what BMW does best: the M3. They do not feel like the core "M" product to me.

Another example that I feel the same about is the S-class/CL for M-B. No other MB model is interesting in any way to me, but full sized luxury cars are what MB does best, so that's what I bought (S550). When the new C came out I took a look in case a C63 was interesting to me, but I just can't drag it to the target that the M3 hits with a bullseye.

I'm not brand loyal, obviously, I just want what I feel like is the pinnacle of a company's lineup. Not necessarily what costs the most, but what the company does best. To me that's an M3 over any other BMW any day. So a used M6, sure great car...but I'll pass.

Hmmm ... at the $80K mark you may want to just dump the Europeans and go GTR. You would run circles around the M-fanboys both on the track and on the straights.

... but you be missing the "prestige" and that "something" else only M-people trully understand and feel.

I would personally get the M6, but the reason to get it over the m3 is superficial. There will be tons of m3's on the streets of socal and millions more 3 series EVERYWHERE. An M3 simply does not stand out. The M6 looks like an expensive car, the M3 is a beefed up 3 series no matter what justification is used.

Now, with that out of the way, I would rather drive an M3. If someone truly loves to drive, the M3 is the choice. The new DCT will be amazing, and you can't get that on an M6. Not to mention the handling will be on a completely new level that the M6 with its giant porky ass will never match. If you want to drive, the answer is clear. If you want to stand out from the heard and want to look like you crap money, M6.

If you can pay $90k for a DB9, why not pay an extra $10k for a "high miles" 99/00 Euro 360 Modena?

This is a slippery slope argument.

If being noticed is your only wish then there is numerous cars which will meet that billing better than an M6. As you have already said it is a poor alternative to even the humble M3 that costs much less. Much as I like the idea of having 500hp I think there is better ways of spending your money than on an M6.

I say buy the M3 and spray it pink, then you have the best of both world because you definitely will stand out. Even in SoCal.
