So I wanted to repair a long hairline stress fractures and a chipped area on my CF GTS lip after the clearcoat cracked from hitting a parking curb.

Huge oversight on my part and did not consider the rain that followed as I parked my car outside...

I started sanding with 400, 300, 220, and 200 (we were getting close to the CF so I touched up with 400 grit before applying 2 part epoxy resin). It looked decent however very "globby" after 3 coats, but pushed forward because I was planning to wetsand with 1000 and 2000 to level any highspots.

I checked on it this morning and saw this mess... -

Any ideas on how to correct this? Would love to hear any suggestions on repairing too.

Something is wrong with the type of resin you are using.

Since you are working with a larger area... You need to basically sand down into the where the fibers are pretty much. You didn't sand enough from the looks of it.

After sanding it and applying it on the bare CF surface, it should look like glass.
The globbiness is probably from where air got into the clear resin. When you stir the two-part solution of resin make sure you don't stir it vigorously.

From what I see now, I would try to sand again and try to polish to see if it makes any difference. Otherwise redo the job with a different resin.

Did the application look funky? I thought it looked decent after the 3rd coat until the rain made contact.

I definitely stirred pretty aggressively so will keep in mind!

What grit do you recommend? I plan on starting with 400, 1000, and 2000. Although I am considering redoing the entire thing given that it had 2 hours to cure...

I was using that fine tipped foam brush you linked.

I don't think you did something wrong. I think the fact that they were rained on was a huge factor here. Id sand as the second poster suggested and try again on a well forcasted day.

start with a more aggressive grit, like 120 or 200... 400 will take forever to get down to the fiber...

EDIT: nvm i see that you started with 100, thats the way to go.

Dude... why are you doing any of this in the rain? The rain came in contact and ruined it most likely.
The steps you took seemed to have been fine.

Thanks! I updated the op but I actually used 400 grit down to 200.

Complete oversight and lack of experience on our end lol.

It rained 2 hours after the last coat. Lesson learned.

Should be salvageable I believe..

I was scrolling through your series of pictures and got to what I thought was the last one and for a few seconds I was extremely confused at how it went from the first few to this... then I realized it was some sort of imbedded advertisement or spam for "diabetes porn" showing a large glazed rack of ribs. At first I was very very confused how it went from pretty bad CF situation to this... Carry on.

Actually depending on the angle of the lip, he can probably do it with it on the car, just make sure the resin isn't running. Otherwise mask the bottom with tape and then use 1500/2000 grit sandpaper to level the resin after, then polish to a high gloss.

I applied 3 layers of resin approximately 1-1.5 hours apart.

It's somewhat globby and not very even but I will wet sand with 400 - 1000 - 2000 and polish with compound to restore shine. Open to any recommendations as to the finishing step.

wet sanding at 400 to remove the globbiness will be too much.
Do 1000, 1500, 2500.

I'd sand it ALL the way down to the bare fiber then have it sprayed clear.. was it an expensive lip? The other option would sand it/bondo it/ building primer/ color match it to car. Or...

Do 1000, 1500, 2500.
starting with 1000 on a surface that uneven will take forever. MAYBE if using a DA you mite be able to get away with 1000, but still, i dont think so.

Thanks. I'm going to try with 1000 first and adjust lower if necessary.
