Is this Possible? Video Comparison - Engine Runs Quieter with Shell Helix Brand Oil?

After about 1,000 miles with Motul 10W-60 I changed my s65's oil to BMW's M TwinPower Turbo 10W-60 oil (Shell Helix Ultra Racing 10W-60 oil or a very similar formulation). I thought the engine sounded "smoother" with the BMW/Shell oil, but chalked it up to my imagination. Then I came across this video. How likely is this scenario really?

Some cars do seem to run quieter on certain oils. The oil chemistry is different, and in the above example, you have two oils that have very different viscosity curves.

There was a lot of discussion on this at Bob Is The Oil Guy and I believe there is at least one SAE paper on it. The consensus is that small acoustic changes from oil are normal and don't indicate a problem (or lack of one).

No you are right , same thing here...I noticed my S65 runs smoother with the BMW /// M TwinPower Turbo 10W-60 oil .
Engine warms up 20% faster ..

Agree .... even I had noticed the difference when Bmw switched from Castrol to shell ... I thought I was imagining things but a co-worker had similar impressions .... have noticed that it does warm up faster but it also runs a tad bit hotter at full operating temps ... not too much but the temp needle has shifted ever so marginally towards the warmer side when at operating temps

I'd bet you a beer you won't notice any difference. It'll be a placebo effect: I could swap various 10w60s out in your car and you'd have no clue.

for an oil, possibly.

i wasn't sure about an oil additive until i added it to my 40 year old gas edger's oil... undebatably smoother operation. in the grand scheme of things, small things add up to larger things that can really make a difference. these cars are sensitive enough to have different attitudes in different ambient temperatures. won't know until i try it.

I can definitely confirm that the new BMW Twinpower Turbo 10w60 oil warms up faster than the Castrol. After a winter of early morning starts just above freezing temperatures and a fifteen minute commute I can now get the oil level indicator to read the oil level by the time I get to work. This never happened with the Castrol 10w60.

For those who have switched directly from Castrol 10W-60 to BMW Twinpower Turbo 10W-60 (or Shell Helix Ultra 10W-60), did you experienced any noticeable difference in engine noise between those two oils?

I posted this a while back when I was one of the first to make the switch and write about it. Glad that I'm not the only one that noticed it.

I can slightly notice the engine seems to run a bit quieter and smoother. Oil temperature seems to be a bit lower overall as well.

No change, and on-track temperatures (according to the needle) are the same.

I recently switched from Liqui-Moly 10w-60 to M TwinPower Turbo 10W-60 and engine started making ticking noise at idle .M TwinPower Turbo 10W-60 oil is much thinner than Liqui Moly 10W-60 which is probably better for colder climate.Switching back to Liqui Moly and Ceratec aditive.
