Why would you let the dealer do the analysis?

Ok, the service manager called me right back and agreed to pay for an analysis when I brought the car in for service. The only problem with that is the car is garaged for the winter and the dealer is about an hour away, so it might be a little bit of time before I get it back to the dealer.

I have driven about 2500 miles since the last service, so I will not want the car if they did indeed but the wrong oil. Hopefully it will show 10w60 on the analysis.

Personally, I would just pull the oil sample myself and send it to Blackstone and have them do it. You wouldn't have to leave the house.

I just ordered a test kit from Blackstone.

I am down a quart right now... so I'd hate to pull more out and then have to add before driving to the dealer. Aren't I going to have a hard time removing just a little oil?

I just thought I could bring the kit to the dealer with me... watch them fill it, seal it and send it off...?

Whatever you are most comfortable with I guess. If I was questioning the oil though, I wouldn't want to drive the car at all if I didn't have to.

Have them change your oil again? I would not risk driving around until an oil sample gets sent back weeks later.

At my 1200 service my invoice stated the correct oil was put in. But I changed the oil again myself at 1300 miles just to make sure the correct oil was put it. I have a hard time believing stealerships. I also have major OCD with this car.

Oil came out very clean (as it should), so I gave it to my friend to use.

I actually asked if they would put in the 5W-30 for the winter. I'm not tracking the car currently and the 5W-30 is probably better for the car from a winter wear perspective anyway. Of course, they wouldn't vary from the factory required oil.

OP, I wouldn't sweat it, but ask your service adviser anyway. If you're upset, have them put the normal sludge back in it.

It doesn't exactly get hot in Pittsburgh and during the winter months they prob did you a favor. No harm done if the used 5-30 get over it.

The service was in July, I am just now noticing... your post just emphasizes the fact that you didn't read much...

I still think people are getting a little crazy over this... unless it gets really hot AND you're flogging the car, either oil is going to lubricate the engine sufficiently. What's the highest oil temp you saw since July?

Case in point... Most S62's spec either 5w30 or 10w60, they just burn a little more oil if you run 5w30. The guys that run them in Sweden run 5w30 or even thinner in winter.
I have noticed the S65 runs a bit hotter, but not alot hotter.

Its not preferable to use anything other than 10W60 but that doesnt mean that your motor is hurt in anyway.I do understand your frustration and prolly some new guy thats not familiar with M models and what kind of oil they usually use but the guy in the parts dep should wake up.
m sure your dealer will do the right thing and take care of it.
Good Luck !

I'm still, for what it's worth, believing the clerical error part. The same thing happened to me. I caught it when picking up the car. They proved to me beyond any doubt that they put in the correct oil. When they draw oil from their "economy" drums, every draw is recorded. These clerical errors DO happen. Unless they did something totally crazy, why wouldn't you trust them to do the analysis?

The 5w30, as already stated, won't do any damage. If you want piece of mind, ask the dealer to just do another full oil change. If they will pay for an analysis, they should have no problem with that.

I highly doubt they would put standard 5W-30 in an M car. The techs know without a doubt that the M's call for 10W-60. It's most likely a clerical error, but if you want to make sure, as others have said, use Blackstone labs.

putting in 5w-30 is not necessarially going to damage your engine. The oil will likely burn off more quickly than 10w-60, but it's not the end of the world. Probably not the best idea to track with it either.

My post emphasizes that average monthly temperatures in Pittsburg are pretty moderate. (see below) Given that it's not exactly Texas or Arizona when it comes to climate and that the thermodynamic physics of air to water cooling are exponential, rather than linear, the effects of 5w-30 oil in your car should have little to no effect. In-fact in the winter months it's actually be of benefit when it comes to cold starting.

I stand by my earlier statement, get over it and don't let inconsequential issues like this burden you with gastronomical reactions.

Engine oil for diesels is slightly different to that for petrol cars...having more detergent and different additives. In the short term using diesel oil for everyday running is not likely to cause damage but long term and especially if combined with a lot of high rpms I'd be concerned.

Well, I finally got my oil analysis back from Blackstone and their results seem to jive with what the dealership told me. Pretty cool:

I suggest you read up on what the multi-weight ratings mean on oil.

The first number is only "cold" start viscosity of oil.. the second number is the viscosity of oil tested at 210 degrees. (hint: the engines normal operating temperature) Using the lower 30 viscosity oil will cause more wear to inevitably occur. So to say no "harm done..get over it" is not only wrong..its irresponsible

Again wrong..use common sense..an oil that is twice as viscous is required..using an oil that is half viscous will defintly result in wear and engine damage

Using 10w 60 is not a "preference" its a requirement
