Despite the change in philosophy across generations I think the E9x and G8x are largely similar in terms of the driver needs being served. I would say if you want something different, you need to go to one extreme or another (pure sports or pure comfort). I have my E90 along with a “GT-ish” Porsche and they’re different enough to justify keeping both.

I do get the specialness of the E9x platform and agree with the fact that this is a dual purpose (like my G80) car, as you say in english jack of all trades and when i say that my G80 does everything better, don't get me wrong, i am only talking about tangible metrics and not the experience that is, for sure, very different between a G80 and E9x.

About driving the G80, i am basically planning to keep it "for life" as my last 6MT car so am driving it for sure (did 7.5k miles in 6 month of ownership) but don't want to go crazy with it. I am also used to have two cars and i enjoy the different experience it brings and i do not have any second car since 6 months. I also now have a baby so 4 seats are not a must per say but i would enjoy the car on many more occasions if it has 4 seats.

Concerning the Porsche GT cars, TBH i can't in my budget. A GT4 might fit in the near future if crypto's/any other investment go to the moon but in current situation it's a bit too expensive for me.

I am looking around for E9x that could be close to me and will go for an extended test drive i think that could help me make my decision even tough i already drove E9x (E93 dct to be precise) but that was a quick test few years ago (that triggered my M6 e63 buy)

S2000?

I get you have a kiddo and wont be able to take him/her in the sports car, but the nice thing about the other car is its a special treat only for you in every way. Besides, they're too young to be enjoying a real sports car experience anyway so in my view this is the best way to do it. It will give you something that is truly yours (rare when you're a Dad), they cant mess it up, and you will only have them in the larger safer car which will please Mom.

I guess if you modified the E9X pretty heavily it could feel special enough to feel truly different.

And, where did I say it made more power by pressing the power button? Power button off = muted driving experience. great for fuel economy. Power button on = fun mode shit fuel economy. Also depends what setting you have set in idrive for it because there's sport plus which is very sensitive.

I couldn’t tell from this statement: “Had I kept the car stock, I likely would have sold it. In its stock form its very bottled up. I was constantly switching between economy power, and the power button. It was very Jekyll Hyde-ish”. If there’s no power difference, why constantly switch between “economy power” and the “power button”?

A lot of people use “economy power” on track because it gives you a more precise control over the attitude/yawing of the car. The only difference is the % of throttle travel to produce the same throttle response.

I believe SaMaster14 has both. Maybe they can give perspective.

I didn’t mention that I have a f82 and two e92 M3s. The g8x is definitely a step above the f8x in all objective categories but it doesn’t necessarily negate the comparison of the f82 and e92 M3. The s55 3.0 L TT and the s65 NA 4.0 L V8 drive completely differently. The s65 (I have a 3.62 FD DCT LSD, stage 2 tune with an 8600 rpm redline and a Karbonius CF plenum Dinan CF intake elbow on one of my e92 M3s) is such a special engine with a purely linear power band that keeps building power until you hit the rev limiter whereas the s55 reaches peak power

How would you compare the G8x’s S58 powerband to the S55 and S65?

S58 doesn’t have the massive low end torque of the s55 so you can feel a bit of turbo lag until the torque hits. The s58 has incredible mid-rpm torque that the s65 clearly lacks but it doesn’t have the s65 linear pull to redline and beyond (is still pulling harder as you hit the rev limiter). BMW used larger turbos on the s58 to produce a more linear feel but sacrificed low rpm response/turbo lag. The e9x M/s65 might be the slowest in the 1/4 mile but it has the best throttle response and by far the best sounding engine. I still get giddy every time I hit the 8600 rpm redline even after 16 years of ownership.
