Despite the change in philosophy across generations I think the E9x and G8x are largely similar in terms of the driver needs being served. I would say if you want something different, you need to go to one extreme or another (pure sports or pure comfort). I have my E90 along with a “GT-ish” Porsche and they’re different enough to justify keeping both.

S2000? I get you have a kiddo and wont be able to take him/her in the sports car, but the nice thing about the other car is its a special treat only for you in every way. Besides, they're too young to be enjoying a real sports car experience anyway so in my view this is the best way to do it. It will give you something that is truly yours (rare when you're a Dad), they cant mess it up, and you will only have them in the larger safer car which will please Mom. I guess if you modified the E9X pretty heavily it could feel special enough to feel truly different. Last edited by neilum; 01-06-2025 at 02:47 PM.. |

A lot of people use “economy power” on track because it gives you a more precise control over the attitude/yawing of the car. The only difference is the % of throttle travel to produce the same throttle response. Last edited by M3SQRD; 01-14-2025 at 04:42 PM.. |

I believe SaMaster14 has both. Maybe they can give perspective.

I didn’t mention that I have a f82 and two e92 M3s. The g8x is definitely a step above the f8x in all objective categories but it doesn’t necessarily negate the comparison of the f82 and e92 M3. The s55 3.0 L TT and the s65 NA 4.0 L V8 drive completely differently. The s65 (I have a 3.62 FD DCT LSD, stage 2 tune with an 8600 rpm redline and a Karbonius CF plenum Dinan CF intake elbow on one of my e92 M3s) is such a special engine with a purely linear power band that keeps building power until you hit the rev limiter whereas the s55 reaches peak power

S58 doesn’t have the massive low end torque of the s55 so you can feel a bit of turbo lag until the torque hits. The s58 has incredible mid-rpm torque that the s65 clearly lacks but it doesn’t have the s65 linear pull to redline and beyond (is still pulling harder as you hit the rev limiter). BMW used larger turbos on the s58 to produce a more linear feel but sacrificed low rpm response/turbo lag. The e9x M/s65 might be the slowest in the 1/4 mile but it has the best throttle response and by far the best sounding engine. I still get giddy every time I hit the 8600 rpm redline even after 16 years of ownership.
