Lowering an E93 M3

Merry Christmas all,

Im a proud owner of an E93 M3.
Pretty much stock apart from custom exhaust and carbon intake & plenum.

I’ve been thinking about lowering the car a bit but keeping the EDC. My mechanic is strongly recommending me not to drop the car as its already quite low ground clearance from the ground to the chassis.
I just don’t like the look of the front which I feel it a bit high.

His statement is that lowering it will cause lack of driving performance and especially issues going into parking garages which we have a lot of here in Shanghai.

Any comments or advice ?

He’s not wrong. I’m mildly lowered on clubsport coilovers and have trouble with some driveways and parking garages. I mimicked the M3 GTS ride height which is something around 20mm lower than a stock e92. The front wheel opening is bigger than the rear to accommodate wheel turning and suspension articulation. Measure the side sills of your car and I bet you’ll find there is already front to rear rake. The rear appearing lower is an illusion.

I lowered mine with the H&R springs to what would be circa equivalent to "competition" height with the E92. I did cheat a little bit and add "rough road" spacers in the rear so that the rear didn't sit lower than the front (which I hate the look of). With my lower springs, I also put in new Bilstein B6 as I too, wanted to keep the EDC.

It probably took about a good solid 6 months for all the shocks to fully settle and go to it's natural height. With competition rims and "one-size-up" on the wheels, these fill the fender gap perfect in my opinion with 15mm spacers all around.

As far as the statement of curbs and such, I think having my mporium front tray helps suck-up the front bumper cover to prevent it from bottoming out. Something that is unique to E93 is the "pull rods" that attaches to the retaining mount. These sit at the lowest portion of the rear. On occasion when parking, I have scraped these on parking stops.

Was reminded even that stock (ZCP) can be low when yesterday getting up/out of the garage with my two (adult) kids in the car. Got stuck I guess on the exhaust clamps, they had to get out in order for me to come lose... so your guy have a point.

Is it better to get non-EDC cars if one is planning on modifying suspension?

I thought mine looked better on lowered h&r’s but I would scrape my driveway apron (which is a dip into a trough before raising into garage), despite the mporium pan and the modest change from stock. Doesn’t take much with these cars! So long term I regretted it over the loss of functionality.

But viva e93s! Welcome

Did you have stock EDC shocks on with your H&R springs? Or did you upgrade to the Bilstein B6s with your setup?

I’m running KW3. Very happy except for the occasional drive way scrapes.

It was the non-edc stock suspension, with h&r sports springs for the e93. Plus the fuzz-buster and the poser grill.

I have BC racing coilovers, and love them. Manually adjustable at all 4 corners, so it rides like a boat in its softest setting, and it gets quite firm in its stiffest (stiffest only used for the track or a butter smooth road)...and everything in between.

My lowered E93 has gone EVERYwhere, and never had a problem, as long as you drive carefully when the roads turn to sh@#! I've made several trips into NYC in my E93, no problems...just have to be careful. And slowwwwww over speed bumps.

For reference...

Lowered on Bilstein B16 Damptronics coil over kit w/EDC - zero issues and shit hot performance for street/autocross application.

Personally, not a fan of al a carte/mixing of suspension components unless a suspension/track expert for focused application.

IMO, self 'experimentation' usually equates to more $$$ spent, sub-optimal results along the way than acquiring proper vetted solutions.

I do not, my shop invoice shows their part #, not the BC coilover part #.

I believe it's these though, with the top mount adjustment on each: https://shop.bcracing-na.com/product...mw-3-series-m3

Those pix were taken a long time ago, I can't even remember who took them.

And here's a grainy, amateur video shot many moons ago as well, where you can see the Work Emotions in motion (pun intended ). This is rolling evidence that you should lower an E93, if possible.

No. EDC cars need to have EDC coded out or an EDC plug-n-play cancellation kit installed.

I’d be cautious with BC coilovers. I had them on my old Benz. They died after 2 years. Got really clunky and noisy. But they are affordable compared to other brands like Bilstein or KW.
