![]() ![]() Featured on BIMMERPOST.com Although the N/A engines with their ITBs and melodic symphonies are a thing of the past, we can still honor and appreciate such masterpieces of engineering without drawing negativity to the future. Looking back, the S65 is truly special in that not only was it "inspired" by motorsport, but it is also a base [engine] from which motorsports continue to borrow from to this day. To me, that is an extraordinary legacy that we can all be proud of, and I will share my knowledge and findings below. I hope this is something that not only E9X M3 owners can appreciate, but something the whole BMW enthusiast community can find excitement in as well. ![]() The S65 engine (& its derivatives) continue to live on in various racing applications (including in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, etc.) by different teams in various cars/chassis, and in various configurations (displacements ranging from 3.6L~4.5L+). I've compiled (an incomplete) encyclopedia on racing engines that use the S65 as a base engine. Some of these you've probably never heard of while others (like the Z4 GT3) are quite familiar. I also encourage fellow members to contribute more information regarding S65-based engines in racing applications. Wow that Z4 GTE looks something unreal. 480BHP and spins out to 9000RPMs. Amazing. Does this mean our S65 could get to 9000 as well?

OP - awesome compilation !!! Reminds me why it just feels special !!!!
Just read on my top gear app this morning - the M4 DTM car also uses a 4L V8. Betcha that's a S65 derivative ..... Don't know of any other BMW 4L V8 configurations. If this can be verified, that would be another application . They are gonna stay in the 4L V8 configuration before the entire series moves to 2L turbo 4s in 2017. Some legacy of our beloved S65.... |

Fantastic, I swear I can recognize my engine's noise in that Aquila car! High-rev snarl and induction noise (favorite of mine); the only thing that I am missing is the foot-long flame shooting out of the exhaust...

Thank you for this! One of the reasons why I chose the e9x over the f8x.

In the spring of 2013, I was doing my research on the E92 and then learned of the next M3/M4 that uses inline 6, turbo. I'm not a fan of turbo, especially that is AWD. Plus the sound of the M4 is just gawdly awful.
I'm so glad I went with the E92 as I just love everything about it. It's such a complete car! Love seeing these threads showing great appreciation for the great S65B40! 👍 |

Excellent list! The E92-based DTM car crushed the competition in 2012 and 2013, and for the 2014 season the engine was transplanted into a new M4 body and crushed it again. Back in 2001, it was again a 4L V8 that had them curb-stomping the entire ALMS series until Porsche got them kicked out, and BMW Sauber also saw great success with that engine configuration until BMW exited F1.

This is just a fantastic post! Thank you so much for gathering all the data and presenting it in such a clean manner--it really highlights the wonders that are the S65 although we may all be biased toward it
