Question Secondary Air Valve Replacement - How to access?

My car is throwing a fault code for a bad Secondary Air Injection (SAI) pump. It is my understanding that these go bad due to faulty Secondary Air Valves, which fail in the open condition and allow exhaust gases to flow backward into the pump. I would like to replace the valves when I replace the pump to prevent premature failure of the new pump.

I searched long and hard for a DIY or even just some photos, but it doesn't seem there's any information about accessing the Secondary Air Valves. I'm trying to figure out how they are accessed before I begin the replacement procedure.

Are the valves accessed from above the engine, or from underneath?

Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated.

Here are some relevant photos:

I did it a mix of from under and on top...the outer bolts closer to the firewall is what I did from up top.

For the lowers I lowered the Tranny and let it hand down, you should remove the fan before doing so as well.

Thanks for the info. I haven't been under the car yet, so I'm not familiar with how the transmission is mounted. How did you go about lowering it?

Might save you some time and $ to tune it out if you prefer that route.

I have the ESS tune, and the cold-start is definitely disabled. I'm still getting DTC 27AF for the Secondary Air Pump. They are known to fail, so I'm assuming mine has. Are there tunes that suppress the SES light for a failed pump? I have to pass an OBD scan for inspection here in NY.

Remove the driveshaft from the tranny, and remove the trans mount bracket and mounts. I did mine on a lift though.

looking from under the engine I don't see an easy way to access the bank 1 valve either. Here is a pictureName: valve.jpg

You can usually pass with one sensor off, but then you'd need to have cats

Ah thanks. I think I'll most likely replace the valves. My pump works (I feel it pull air on startup) but the tubes may be blocked. Anyone have experience accessing the valves? Is dropping the tranny absolutely necessary?

No you don't need to drop the transmission. You can do it from above. If you have smaller hands and patience, you only need to remove the cowl filters and if you still have difficulty, you may also need to remove the engine wiring harness (or unsecure it and move it forward enough to reach behind.)

In Cali the only item that doesn't have a green readiness and pass is the EVAP canister. All else must be in readiness.

The BMW way is to take out the entire exhaust manifold. Insane.

This is like a 45 minute job if you're competent and have the right tools. Like deans said you will need to remove the cowls.

Remove the cowl panel and use a racheting wrench on the top nut and low profile Rachet on the Lower nut, it’s not impossible to do.

Just curious if anyone has any updates on this work or any more experience? I will be performing this work in the coming weeks to pass emissions in GA.

I get that we have to remove the cowl panel but no one mentioned having to remove the plenum? Can we do this without removing the plenum?

Thanks in advance!
