He says that the CarMax warranty 'saved' him $6k already, but when I purchased my M3 from CarMax several years ago, the cost of the warranty itself was more than that.

When you hear the word 'quirk' in a car review just exit immediately as they have nothing useful to pass on to actual enthusiasts.

Must be a discrepancy in the years.

Your subheading under your username says "Drives: '08 M3 convertible". This is is a 2012.

The warranty only cost $2k. Clearly CarMax smarted up after this M3 and Doug's videos. lol

Someone recently picked up a 2012 M3 from CarMax and paid $4200 for a 6 year/125K mile warranty which is their best offering. They offer different plans as well if you don't need the full 125k miles which would likely be even cheaper.

I got my warranty through Penske for 3yrs/30k additional miles, which is 115k for everything except the electronics and that cost me about 3k (a little bit less, actually).

My Carmax warranty bought with car in April on 2012 E92 with 35k on the clock. Warranty for 5 years or through 75k miles was $2200. Paid out $2k so far.

Ah then like all warranties it is tied to mileage and age.

Yeah they have tiers available priced by car and current mileage. I chose a low-ish tier because at 75k I'll change the bearings or sell it. Plus I didn't want to be $3-5k deep on a warranty.

They have a specific term for cars over a certain mileage. I forgot what it is, but they are probably bigger on the warranty side.

Sure, but I bought mine three years ago, so at the time of the warranties being quoted, a '12 is only one year newer than my '08 was at the time.

Looks like the pricing is so different because his car only had 33k miles and he only bought coverage to 75k miles--I believe I was shopping the 125k mile plan. Definitely not a bad deal but the days of buying a relatively cheap, unreliable vehicle from CarMax and just getting the cheap warranty to cover everything is over. I honestly wouldn't have bought the warranty on a car with that low of miles--that is, I normally don't worry about incurring expensive repairs on a car between 33-75k miles.

That said, I agree with everything he says about CarMax. The whole experience felt a thousand times more genuine and I didn't get any of the normal car sales sleaze on me like you usually do.

I believe they get paid no matter what car you buy or don't buy.

The moving rev limiter is badass Doug, not a quirk!! The no dip stick definitely annoying af and quirky.. the folding rear sunshade? WTF definitely quirky. Battery doesn't bother me, I like it in the trunk. Seat belt hander thingy's that work 17% of the time.. quirky!!

One of my favorite quirks (and maybe this generally a BMW thing?) is when you're done fueling up, you close the gas tank cover and it detracts flush with the car.

On any other vehicle, you close the cover and then you have to press it again to lock it down flush. BMW eliminates that step in one swift motion.

Don't forget the fact that the gas cap locks. Not a quirk specifically for the M3, but it is great knowing that it is one less thing on your car someone can F with.

I always am paranoid people are going to mess with my car, like put water in the gas.
