Sitting here contemplating tires. Don't wanna spend money but don't wanna have no grip. Wish there was a magical tire out there dammit.

If you added up all of the time all we all spend contemplating tires ...

What are the options? Sometimes it's just fun to try a new tire, add to the knowledge bank.

Yeah... always a trade off
more grip = quicker wear. $$$$
a little less grip = better wear $$$

I'm doing the unthinkable and ordering some Nankang NS2R tires for the spring. The guys in Europe seem to love them for the track so we will see. $500 shipped for all 4.

If I end up on the roof, you'll hear about it.

There are also some tires called Zestino sweet looking at.

Yup, I've been looking at those too. They have sizes that are a good fit for our cars (275/35/18 and 285/35/18) in both the 7RS and the Circuit 01S slicks. The 7RS's are < $200 each. The Circuit 01S's are still a bit pricey though.

I've looked at the Federals but they seem to run a bit small (the 275 has a 10.1 inch tread width vs 10.5 for an NT01). They have a 285 but it's a 30 series. I have a brand new set of Maxis RC1's for now though.

I've ran 265 tires for a while now. I don't even think of 275 and can't imagine 285.

Anything you've found researching the slicks?

i wonder how much custom work it would take to run a 315 tire like a z28. these cars would be unbeatable with that much rubber... i'm sure a frame notch would be needed and a little clearance up front by the dct cooler, but it might not be a huge deal.

Yes, you can run 265s but why would you if you can run a 275?

Anyhow, this page seems to indicate their slicks come in a good range of sizes:

I'm pretty sure Dogbone runs 305's on 10.5" ARC8s. So, pretty close.

i thought he was on 295's, but i could be wrong. even 295's rub though. it would be nice to run them without rubbing.

I ran into him at Buttonwillow this last weekend and he said he's now on 305s. He has JRZ's with no helper spring so he has plenty of room on the inside. He also runs -4 negative camber so that helps on the outside. I'm still astonished they fit though. Especially on the outside. Next time I run into him I'm gonna take a closer look.

macdude357---It was nice meeting you at Buttonwillow on Sunday. I enjoyed chatting with you. Seeing your posts in the last couple days, I realize I heard you say your forum name incorrectly when you introduced yourself. In the loud track environment, I thought you said your forum name was "Matthew357". I was like nope, never heard that name before. haha! So, yes, I have seen macdude357's posts before! Sorry for the mix up!

Anyway, yup---I have JRZ RS Pro, 5" front spring (600lbs), no helper spring, around -4º camber in front (basically whatever maximum camber is allowed by the Vorshlag plates), no fender liners, Apex Arc-8 10.5" ET 27, 3mm Macht Schnell spacer, and 305 Pirelli DH.

Anyone who has seen my build thread knows that I have been having all kinds of air intake tube rubbing issues with the VF supercharger intake. Once we removed the fender liner, the tire started hitting the intake tube. Racewerkz has been experimenting with shaping an intake tube and cutting back the hard VF plastic intake tube. We're getting very close to a solution. It was just slightly rubbing on Sunday. I'm actually taking the car to Racewerkz today to see if we can shape a tube even just a little more.

In addition to the intake, I will tell you, putting such a fat tire up front rubs all over the god damn place in that wheel well. If you don't want rubbing, don't try this at home kids. Ironically, about the only place it doesn't rub hardly at all is on the outside. I have a 5mm spacer and have run that, but I prefer the 3mm spacer for some reason. The 5mm spacer really kills off that hob-centric lip that the wheel rests on when you mount it, which makes me feel like I'm doing something wrong.....Anyway, I bet that extra 2mm might have kept the tire off the intake tube on Sunday. The tolerances were that close.

Ahhhh motorsport----always something to work on, right?

He also has 650hp and I'm guessing he needs that rubber a lot more than our cars to put the power down.

I remember there was another guy on here who ran 305 or 315 hoosiers squares from a few years back. Can't remember the name. Google will probably know though.

I tried the RS-R (the older version of the RS-RR I think) and they were surprisingly fast tires for the price, even with a slight decrease in size compared to other bands.

Vents are back from paint. Car is pretty dirty, but you get the idea.

Did a comparison of RS-RR vs RE-71R in my E46. The RE-71R is much quicker, at least with my driving style and suspension tunings. I feel like I could have dialed in the RS-RR better in terms of suspension, but it takes a lot of messing with. RE-71R is fast out of the box:

Bridgestone RE-71R

Also, though I do a lot of my own work my next COTA track day is fast approaching so I dropped the car off at my favorite shop today for a few things. Poly engine mounts going in (I already installed the poly transmission mounts), diff fluid flush to Castrol Syntrax 75w-140 (purchased from ECS but now see FCP has a much better price), dinan midpipe resonator weld crack being re-welded, tender springs and perches coming out (will be running 6" 600 lb front springs w/ no helpers), and new track alignment.

New alignment: -3.2 F, 0 toe, -2 R, slight toe-in for stability

I'm hoping this will combat the extreme outer edge tire wear I was seeing on the fronts with -2.6 and slight toe-out.

A few other track preps, changed my engine oil over the weekend and ordered Pagid RS-29 yellow front pads, the RS-14 blacks were locking up the Cup 2's a bit under hard braking so I thought I'd try something with a lower max coefficient of friction, we'll see how it goes. Still running RS-19's in the rear.

Looking forward to getting back out there!
For sure let me know if bmw specific codes can be read / not just generic. Let me know what the update process is when you get it. Or if comes updated from purchase. Was looking @ this as well as another unit. Cheers!

The Nankangs are surprisingly good. I got the 120 TW version. They warmed up quickly, were consistent, grippy, and did not overheat. Where are you finding them for $500 shipped? Last time I checked, each tire cost around $160.

Thanks for the feedback. Glad I'm not the only one looking at these. You give me a little more confidence trying these out haha.

That's not bad for a set. Might be worth it for those days at willow springs.... that tack will ruin a new set of tires. I'm about to pickup another set of track wheels.

So I just picked my car up from the shop yesterday and

The car has never felt as dialed in as it does now. Between the poly engine and transmission mounts and removing the front tender springs (I was experimenting with ~180 ft/lb tenders) the car feels incredible.

dogbone warp10 I need to see how these AKG mounts hold up after some track abuse but these may be a good addition for you. The main benefit for me is that the car does not dip forward when I touch the brake pedal, it just plants, allows for a lot more on/off the brakes finesse. I experienced this before with the vibra-technics mounts before they failed on me, then went back to OEM, now on to poly and it's a notable difference. Can't wait to try this setup at COTA on my b-day in a few weeks.

I should also mention that my rear-view mirror is blurry most of the time now b/c of the NVH, completely acceptable for me but I wouldn't do this to a daily!
