I'm in Denver, but all I have is the AFE intake and filter, and an AA pulley. Probably doing one of the x-pipes this summer. Not sure which one yet (Fabspeed, Sosi?), can't decide if I want resonators or not. I'm putting it off because I don't want it to sound like my E46 M3 did. I do want to dump the rear cats. The thing is though, mine is an 09, so I got the first two years with no inspection. Think I'm due this year, but I probably already passed by driving through the on-ramp stations.
BTW, in case those of you in Denver don't know this, those drive through on ramp stations can fail you even if you're not due for an inspection. My son got a notice in the mail once that he had failed and had to go to a real station for a test at no cost. He passed no problem. He was not due for a renewal.

STATE: MA

EMISSIONS REGULATIONS:

Must pass OBD readiness on 6 out of 7 monitors. One can fail or not be ready. This has to be done every year.

MOD PROGRESSION:

Before supercharging I had Dinan intake, pulley, AA exhaust, Dinan TB, Dinan stage 2 tune and Dinan x pipe (no cats), 4.10 diff, and ESS tune.

I would pass but would need to swap stock x pipe on back and forth. Bring it to my BMW dealer to do the swaps and inspection. Off I would be in about a few hours.

This year had VF 540 kit with same exhaust bolt ons (no intake, pulley or Dinan software as it is VF now). Swap back stock x pipe and put stock VF file for stock cats. Could not pass readiness. Was told it would, but kit is for off road use only and not emissions compliant. Could not even get more than 2 monitors to set readiness with VF software and hardware. Tried over 800 miles of driving cycles. Had rejection sticker.

Took off VF 540 and put ESS 575 on with stock X pipe. was told by ESS to drive vehicle for approximately 200 miles and 6 out of 7 monitors would set readiness. This is with the stock file provided by ESS for stock cats. Exactly 200 miles and all systems were a go. Got inspection sticker. Also, no other issues emissions related for smog increase with ESS or VF blower. All done at my BMW dealer.

Yes MA is a complete pain just for $29 sticker. But unfortunately a must. Maybe I should get an old MOPAR so it wouldn't even matter

Until next April. You guys in the south got it made!

It seems no one catless has passed emissions via OBD check. That isn't a good thing for me.

Error message

O.K., this is messed up. When I push the "M" button, everything feels right, but I get a yellow warning light (circle with an ! in the middle. The big warning light goes away after a minute but a small one remains until I disengage the "M" button. This has never happened before and I can't get a straight answer from the dealer. PLEASE, does anyone know what's going on? Thanks.

Passed CT emissions. O2 sensor will not set ready in this configuration, but as long as all other monitors are ready and no CEL, you're okay in CT.

Reviving an old thread: Any M3s from Texas have luck with high flow cats and passing inspection year after year? If I can't get them to pass, I will probably stick to cat back exhaust.

If so, any particular tips on helping them pass?

I am running test pipes and pass with the tune, as long as there is no check engine light then you are good.

Thanks for the reply. Can you tell me which test pipes and tune you have? I've read some tunes turn off CEL but will not allow OBD-2 readiness. How can you pass when removing primary cats?

You can't. I have test pipes, primary cats are gone, stage 2 ESS, and I do not pass. I will never pass readiness. It will always say "O2 and Cats".... once you remove the primary cats you will never pass. Hence my problem right now. I go through this every two years when I have to reg with DMV.
Is it possible to put the cats back on with the test pipes and leave my tune as is and then pass?

Thats not what I've read. With a Stage 2 tune, as long as its an 'off road tune' it will force the make O2 sensor ready so that CEL is not triggered and it passes inspection. Its just a grey area since they are not to be used on the road with those tunes.

Not sure how you say I cant, lol. I got the sticker to prove it. All they did was hook up to the ODB port and 15 min later I was on my way. No visual inspection that I know of. Its time for another inspection this month. I'm sure I will pass again fine. I am running Rogue Eng test pipes and BPM Stg2 tune.

You are missing the primary cats and passed an inspection? Cause I am missing them and will not, with stage 2 tune as well. I know if you remove the secondary cats you'll pass. It's news to me.

This is incorrect. A stg 2 tune doesn't force the rear 02 sensors into ready. It just won't throw a code for rear cat inefficiency. It still won't show the rear 02s as ready.

Every state is different. Some states allow one readiness code to be not ready. In Cali the only readiness code that doesn't have to be ready is the EVAP. Everything else has to show green. Texas only has a OBD check, if there is no CEL and you don't have any codes you can pass inspection from what I understand.
