Simple tint question.....
Hi All!!!
I'm moving to Orange County in the next month or so and where I'm currently live the tint regs are softer than Cali's. From what I read it is legal for a tint of 70% for front and any for rear. I currently have 35% all around. I will be registering the car there shortly after moving. My question is... Will the registration process for my 08 M3 include and inspection of the tine? Should I have the tint removed here and put a 70% tint on the front to be compliant as a precautionary measure? Your opinions are appreciated! Thanks, john |

Any tint is not allowed in California on the front windows.
I know a guy that does great window tint jobs when you are ready to do It again. His price cannot be beat, and he is mobile. Malek

The DMV is not going to inspect your car when you register it. If you leave the tint on in the front you run the risk of getting pulled over for it. It is a fix it ticket. Having said that, in 40 percent all around.

I looked at this site to get the law of 70% pass through on the front windows
http://www.tintcenter.com/laws/CA/ Is it incorrect as far as you know? I have a lexus lx570 with 70% on front and btw 70% is hardly noticeable as tint but it does block some of the heat. Do you think that will be OK? thanks john |

You'll be fine. In my experience, you'd either 1. really have to be an asshole or 2. be doing something reckless or very dangerous where the tint ticket will be added on top of whatever ticket your already getting to get a tint ticket for only 35% on a classy car. In fact, 30-40% is very, very common on luxury cars in SoCal. Now if you were driving a "ricer", I might be concerned. I personally prefer 50% because I like the oem showroom look.

Straight from CHP.
Can I put after-market tinting on the windows of my vehicle? The main requirements for legal window tinting in California are: 1.The windshield and front driver's side and passenger's side windows cannot receive any aftermarket tinting. 2.If the rear window of a vehicle is tinted, the vehicle must have outside rearview mirrors on both sides. The law prohibits any person from driving any motor vehicle with any object or material placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied upon the windshield or side or rear windows, with certain limited exceptions. However, legislation signed into law effective January 1, 1999, exempts from the above prohibition specified clear, colorless, and transparent material that is installed, affixed, or applied to the front driver and passenger side windows for the specific purpose of reducing ultraviolet rays. If, as, or when this material becomes torn, bubbled or otherwise worn, it must be removed or replaced. http://www.chp.ca.gov/html/answers.html

Didn't read anyones reply only your first sentence and. It is illegal to have ANY tint period in the two front windows driver and passenger PERIOD. Here's the proof.
http://www.chp.ca.gov/html/answers.html Not sure why people think a certain % is legal in the two front ITS NOT. So the way I look at it is this. If your going to tint the car or have tint in the front you might as well go all out and just do 5% all around.
