E90 M3 exhaust Leak?
So recently I added ACM test pipes to my car and all went well besides me not removing the stock cat bracket so I had a rattling noise at low rpm and idle. So this weekend I decided to take some time and remove the bracket and when doing so I re adjusted the clamp a little. Well today was the first time taking out the car and I notice this ticking noise and I can really only hear it well at low rpm when barley pressing the throttle or inbetween shifting gears as the rpm drops or when I turn my wheel like the video I took shows. Any thoughts on this? I notice the factory x-pipe didnt have a gasket but just figured it was normal as the rest of the exhaust just connects with clamps too. Thought... Comments would be appreciated.

Do you notice that noise when you are just idling or just when under a small amount of throttle?

Hmm, interesting. My car sounds very similar to yours while you were idling there in that video (ticking that quiets up after it's gets to proper temperature), but I always assumed that was valve train noise not exhaust. Have you gotten a CEL light? I would assume that if you had a leak at the header/xpipe that it would throw a CEL after awhile.

Ok so I just got got back from my cousins shop where he was nice enough to let me use his lift. It was an exhaust leak. The issue I had was with the band clamps. So the best way to explain it besides tightening them too much is there is a sleeve that tightens another sleeve on the inside of the clapm. Well the inside sleeve got un aligned when I was cranking down on it and wallah it bent, infact I must have hulked the passenger side because I actually bent the stock section in a near V shape.

Can you post a video from the same spot with the exhaust leak fixed?

Ticking is normal and on a cold start it will sound like it has an exhaust leak for sure (sounds like a header gasket leak), but you're also running test pipes so you now have an additional breach in the pipes which require that sleeved clamp (which is a fine clamping setup).
Best way to check for a leak there? Since the car will warm up quick put the car up in the air cold and start it. Put your hands around the pipes and you'll be able to tell right away if there's a leak as you'll feel the exhaust escaping. |

This is an old thread sorry to resurrect this back up I also have an exhaust leak sound on cold start. It's very loud and annoying well it sounds like an exhaust leak as explained above. I had it on a lift and looked around to me on a cold start with my ears against eh exhaust it sounded like a very loud echo inside the catalytic converters. I inspected the heads and did not see any burn marks of signs of exhaust leak so that isn't an issue. Again, is sounds like a very loud echo in the Cats, it does this on cold start and continues at idle when a bit warmed up. When completely warmed it's quiet. However, when first taking off I hear it still temporary low Rpms. Any thoughts to share please share.

test pipes always leak if you use clamps. Weld them on or get a full x pipe.

Apologize for bringing this back up but for some reason I can't view the youtube videos posted. I too believe I may have an exhaust leak but want to hear what you were experiencing before trying to fix it. Do you happen to still have that video?

Just wanted to resurrect this thread to provide people with the solution. Its the exhaust gaskets between the headers and primaries.
On cold starts, my car would turn over, then sound like it was falling it face before slowly kicking in. It sounded like a cammed LS. It was showing signs similar to a bad ICV or actuators. Car has stalled a few times before. 2 weeks ago the car went into limo mode. I shut it off, started it and it was fine. Didnt throw codes either. Ive gotten the "increased emissions" warning 3x as well. Whenever I would scan the car, I sometimes got O2 sensor errors. Also on cold starts, after it would cycle, after roughly 5 seconds it would start again. If you have a DCT car like me and you heard a pop when downshifting, thats another sign too. After replacing these gaskets, the car starts up beautifully like it should. Its like the car was congested. Exhaust note also sounds smoother and less twangy. Heres the part # 11627830668 Replacing it is very simple. Max time, an hour. Hope this helps.
