another question which needs to be answered....

what is purpose of said car....if just a beater or another "workhorse" then fuck it...as long as it runs

now if you want to have some prestige in this car then all the repairs will need to be in check....

but aside from bodywork...what can hail damage? srsly idk

If hail breaks the windshield or side windows (has to be pretty big hail) then you can be talking about water damage to the electronics. That would be about the only big thing I can see to worry about.

No the issue is rust. often the hails does so much damage to so much of the car that repairs are cosmetically OK but the protective layers to inhibit rust are broken and in a few years you're dealing it raises it's head.

In Australia we don't touch hail damaged cars, just too much hassle.

The paint layer is pretty much what prohibits rust, if the paint is not cracked then you wouldn't really have that issue. Generally to repair older spots we just sand them down to the metal and paint the area to prevent future rust, much like removing and capping a cavity.

When I was looking for my next car, my wife and I were at a lot and she was looking at a new Buick with 14 miles on it. She asked why it was so cheap (it was $6k below other new ones) and they said it was hail damaged and they repaired it. So instead of getting my first Bimmer, we got her the Buick. It's now 11 years old and at 103k miles and it's just now showing some rust. Other than that, it's still in great condition and our daughter is driving it now.

Youre in Ohio, Id expect rust at that stage. Sounds like you guys made out well.
