Thinking of selling my NSX for Cayman S

Love love love my NSX, but I've been drolling over the 981 Cayman lately and depending how much I could get for my 1992 NSX I could probably get into a nice 2014-16 Cayman S with all the bells and whistles of the latest technology and still have that mid engine balance and pure sports car that the original NSX offered.

Just hate the fact that the NSX is appreciating while the Cayman will deprecate

Although it won't drop much as I will be buying used 981 and the initial depreciation has already hit. Some say the 981 will someday become collectible status as it's the last of the NA flat six as Porsche moves towards the smaller 4 banger turbo versions.....haha, I'm trying to talk myself into it

Obviously I'd love to have a GT4 but it's just not in my budget right now so the Cayman S will have to do....I've also considered the base model as they have rave reviews and you can get newer CPO for same price as older higher mileage S version.

I've also starting looking into the R8's as they have become affordable although they are still about $65K for a 2008-10 v8 as opposed to the $45-50k formthe 2014-16 Cayman 981..

Somebody talk me out of it....although it's probably too late, once I start obsessing over a certain car I end up getting one sooner or later

Here is a nice loaded base 2016 CPO with 6 speed manual with 11k Miles for $49,900 at Porsche in OC

Or a 2015 Cayman S with PDK with 16K Miles for the same price from private owner

I don't know your financial situation but I think a few years down the road (especially if you see income growth) you'll kick yourself for getting rid of the NSX instead of trying to make both work.

Also, I don't think the 981 will ever be special. The "last of the six" storyline might take some twists and turns as sales of the 718 were subpar largely due to people not wanting a $80k 4-banger. Rumor-mill has the sixes coming back...I could imagine a base cayman having the turbo 4 and the S or GTS having the six moving forward.

I definitely wouldn't drop $50k on one. They'll continue to come down, especially in other parts of the country...and (not hoping this happens) especially once the economy gets a bit more turbulent.

Yeah I believe the new GT4 will have a 6 cylinder.

Yeah, I know I'll be kicking myself for selling the NSX....I always do(on my third one now )

I think I'm just spoiled with the comfort and tech of my f32 and want that same thing in a sports car... the Porsche will be almost 25 years newer than my NSX.

I'd love to swing both, but selling the NSX will be the only way I could do it...as I also have three other cars (two of them with payments) and two teenagers

I'm planning on test driving a couple of them this week and will know more after that, but from what I've read and watched on the web, it is that the 981 is an amazing car....Porsche purposely detunes them and gives them less power then it's older brother 911 because it would probably kick its ass if they had the same power.

As far as depreciation, yeah it's gonna come down some more for sure, but buying used and only keeping a couple years it's probably a good buy.

Was never really a Porsche guy, but I've been intrigued by the Cayman since it came out and the 981 version was finally good looking enough to seriously consider.

Need to hit that lotto.....get me a gt2, gt3 and gt4

Yeah I'd say keep NSX. Unless you were getting a 911 gt3/rs then I would not sell the NSX for a regular Porsche.

Upgrade to the modern 981. Yes... UPGRADE.

NSX will always be cool. Why not move on to a new experience? The world of Porsche.

I would trade the NSX for the right 981.

Sell that NSX, get rid of it while you can, probably not worth much, price is dropping daily run away while you can, sell it for cheap.

And sell it to me :-)

Yeah, I know, that's why I'm now considering waiting and saving more maybe getting one of these instead

The NSX looks more interesting to me, Porsches feel like a dime a dozen around here, a NSX is very rare to see. You already know the answer by admitting you've regretted each time you made a switch.

At the end of the day, you can go buy any Cayman anywhere but the NSX in your garage is literally one in a million.

The NSX is more of an asset at this point. Get a GT3 or something that will hold the same type of value. Run of the mill cayman will be nice but itís not worth it, chances are you wonít be able to buy an NSX again.

Manual R8 has the potential to hold its value over the near term and will offer the comfort and modern amenities that your NSX lacks. It won't have the awesome steering, or light, tossable nature of the NSX either. I'd keep the NSX, but I haven't owned three of them, you should try something new.

I think that's what it is .... I'm just itching for something different

That and the NSX community has changed so much in the last 16 years since I owned my first one.

I think the R8 is the best bargain out there right now when it comes to rare exotic type cars and will definitely be on my short list ... the 981 just seems much more affordable and many consider one of the best "drivers car" in the world right now.

Probably gonna hit up some Porsche dealerships on Wednesday and finally actually drive one to see if they are all they are cracked up to be.

If it is a 3.2 6MT NSX then the only car I'd consider to replace it with is a V10 6MT R8

There is nothing special about the Cayman or Cayman S's. Sorry.

I understand all the additional comfort of moving from a 1992 sports car and into a 2019 sports car, and it's easy for all us armchair advisers to pour love onto the NSX; but I'm sure living with it on a daily basis is an entirely different proposition.

We often forget the advances made in almost every area in the last 30 years of motoring, until you set foot into a historic sports car (or a modern lotus or Caterham).

But the Cayman or the Boxter is the Porsche you buy if you can't afford a 911.

Owning a 30 year old Cayman will be like owning a Nissan GTS-T ... it's special, but it'll never be a GT-R.

You said it

My car Collection would look very different if certain vehicles were not appreciating instead of depreciating.
