ACL rod bearings?

Guys,

planning and investigating for my RB "service" it turns out ACL is a more common after market shell over here. Sure BE is known of but as 3 times the price vs ACL they seem to have a challenge to get traction with the local shops.
Till now never really heard about ACL, and apparently they quite recently added products for the S65, incl increased clearance. Curious about possible usage and track record. Anyone?

Cheers

You know the old adage, if its to good to be true...

BE bearings aren't that much more than OEM Clevite bearings.

Been focused on BE but they do add onto OEM and more vs ACL so got me thinking. Prio is obviously confidence in material and shop but worth while to reflect.

I have a few sets of ACL bearings here. They’re good lead/copper bearings, preferrable to oem imo but don’t provide the ideal clearance that BE does. They also make a .25 oversize set.

Its the 0.25 oversize that caught my interest, which is the same as BE isn't it?

Cheers

No, BE is .025mm, ACR is .25mm oversize. The .25 is used after cutting down a journal. ACR is the only one I know of making oversize bearings for when you spin a bearing and need the journal ground down.

...thanks Dean, my missunderstanding. Apparently ACL "should" have an extra clearance variant as well, will check if the shop made the same mistake.

Also, one of the shops claim they always reuse the OEM bolts, "since 30 years and on plenty S65/S85". These guys pay like $650 for a set of ARP so.... All I read says never to reuse the stretch bolts but as this shop is reputable Im getting confused. Comments?
(sorry to keep drain you guys on info but thankful)

Bert @ BE Bearings has a set of the ACL bearings and will be measuring and providing specs as he's done on all the other bearings. The results will appear at the BE Bearings wiki page when he's done. Just not sure when that will be.

Hey sounds interesting! Wonder if its the increased clearance once but let's see.

Well....They wouldn't be the first to reuse Torque To Yield bolts. Plenty of others have done it. Myself included before I knew any better. Its not that they'll fail catastrophically and snap in two while the engine is running. The issue with reusing TTY bolts in any application is that once they are torqued they yield certain and repeatable characteristics, i.e. clamp force, bore diameter, etc. Once they have been torqued and you follow the same installation procedures for subsequent fastening you'll end up with skewed results. Bore diameters won't be the same, etc. So yes, they may work in a practical sense but since your final dimensions may be slightly different, you may end up with only 50k on a set of replacement bearings instead of 70k. The shop is probably counting on it being "someone else's problem" by then.

Bert has both sets of ACL bearings. He'll provide measurements for both.

Keeping this alive for a bit more, in search for experience from ACL rod bearings. Got confirmed that they make an version with extemded clearance (.025mm).
Anyone out there?

I heard about ACL bearings from a facebook guy(M3-Schmiede) during conversation about my engine failure. He looks like engineer and has his own shop. he said ACL RB was installed on his E92 M3. I asked him it is better than the others, then his answer was just "it works".
So, I'm searching more information about ACL RB.

Yeah they have clearly being around building bearings for long (own fab, not Clevite like most others) and seem spread in some areas here in Europe while nothing in the US (hence nothing on the board). I've asked them for a bit more spec details on the increased (HX) S65 version, would be interesting to see what their nominal clearance and variation is here. We'll see.

Hello!

I´m not "a new guy" here. I´ve been lurking around here now and then and picked up all good information and thoughts on this great forum.

I have recently tryed out the ACL bearings for my S65. I went for the HX 0.025 undersized versions (more clearence) with ARP rod bolts. The operation was made by me on jack stands in my garage. A quite doable task.
